Dunderbaks is overlooked sometimes in the Tampa Bay beer scene. I think mainly due to its location. They consistently have an amazing beer selection and good food. They are also home to one of Tampa’s largest homebrew clubs. Definitely check it out when you are in Tampa.

Visited mid-May, 2011.

A nice, brightly-lit place made to look like your typical American German restaurant. Big tables which scared me into thinking it’s communal eating, which I hate. It was slow when I went, so luckily it didn’t happen to us.

Our waiter was knowledgeable about beers and knew what was on tap, but wasn’t very attentive to us. We also happened to stop in right as they were printing the new beer menu out for the day, and it never came by the time we were done eating.

There are a lot of good brews on tap, but it’s nothing that is going to blow you away for the area.

The food I had was awesome. I’m not a German food expert, but I do enjoy it very much, and it was stellar.

The beers were priced average, but the food seemed a bit pricey... though still good.

Overall, I think this is a fun place to stop if you want some tasty German food, a goofy atmosphere, and plenty of good brews on tap. I wouldn’t say it’s an absolute necessity while in Tampa, though.

I think I have been going here since I was about 6. My father was stationed in Germany during ’nam. When he came back, he had developed a taste for the Teutonic fare, and many a day of my youth was spent munching on reubens, and watching my pops down Lowenbrau. Much has changed since then, including a new more - bierhall worthy location, and better food. The recent move has increased the tap selection as well. It of course has an amazing European beer collection, and a very knowledgeable bar staff. I have met the owner, and he takes the place very seriously. This establishment has been doing it right on all counts for a very very long time, long before the recent "import beer" renaissance. Stop in for venison and smoked pork sausages, kraut and potato pancakes. You won’t be disappointed.

One of the premier beer establishments in the Tampa Bay area. Alwys have a great selection from off the beaten path and the staff is knowledgable enough to set you in the right direction based on what you do or don’t like. The food is fantastic and the portions are large. I’m kind of partial to this place because we have our brew club meetings here, but I would come here regardless. JB is a nice guy and is a true beer geek.

The ambiance is wonderful here if you like the crowded "sitting with strangers" thing, which I do. Every time I come, it is busy but the wait/bar staff are fantastic. They seem knowledgeable about their beer, and the list is impressive to me. The food is delicious and the menu offers enough variety that it should satisfy anyone. The prices are average. Overall, I enjoy this place and look forward to meeting my future table mates!

Just a great place to have a beer and great German food. This place has an eclectic mix of people showing up ever ynight; from the locals, tourists, and college kids - in a fun and unpretentious atmosphere.

Great selection! A little pricey on the hard to come bys but hey they are hard to come by. I personally love German food and they get the best sausages I’ve had in Florida.

Awesome place! This is one of the first beer bars to offer more than the ’classic’ B-M-C products on tap in Tampa and has grown and expanded over the years to be the biggest and best bar for craft beers in the area. This is a bar with great german food ($8-14 for dinner specials $6-9 for huge sandwiches and salads) and currently with a 55 tap rotating selection of American craft brews and imports. It seems this restaurant rarely orders more than one keg of anything though they try to have a wide variety of classic styles available all the time. I always try to order something new when I go to a new beer bar but if I did that every time I went here I would need a permanent designated driver! Although there is an extensive bottle selection the drafts are really all I have time for. You never know if you are going to be sitting next to an English major from the near-by USF or and English Major reminiscing of world war 2 when you go there with a great atmosphere and plenty of good beer related reading around. If you hit them on a busy night you might not get seated right away but that usually just lends to an extra beer at the bar in the meantime and I have never had to wait more than a couple minutes to get a beer here. Overall a must visit. I have visited most of the so-called top ten beer bars in the US and this place tops them all.
