76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 14/20 Maverick34 (42) New York | March 13, 2009 Good selection, good prices, friendly staff. Just a regular bar. Old school. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Slipstream (82) | March 15, 2013 A regular bar that happens to have an excellent range of beers on tap and in bottles, and for good prices too, especially for a "hip" part of NYC. I agree with bmerz’s comments - it is unpretentious, just a good, classic beer joint. There is a bar room in the front, and quieter tables in the back. They have special events pretty regularly, I gather, so that is another reason to be aware of this place. The waitress was friendly and helpful. I plan to visit again. | 82 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Theydon_Bois (372) The ’Sham, England | December 22, 2012 Have dropped by Mugs a few times, most recently in March ’11 for the ’Split Thy Brooklyn Skull’ strong ale festival
They ordinarily have around 30 beers on tap from across the states, with a good 10 or so from NY and neighbouring states.
On this visit I stayed purely on the rare (and strong - all 8% ABV+) festival beers.
They were reasonably priced at $2.50-3 each and were served in a 6oz glass
The place was busy, but the service was decent considering and we simply stood a few feet back from the bar and sampled somestrong stuff including :-
Arcadia Pappy’s Bourbon Barrel Old Ale
Brekenbridge 471 IMP IPA
Sierra Hoptimum
Left Hand Oak Aged Imperial Stout
Great bar, decent festival, worth a visit on a normal night also.
| 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 17/20 bmerz (118) Brooklyn, New York | October 9, 2012 Mugs is a classic and so deserves to be. There’s no pretense or really any style that’s not sort of it’s own not trying to have style. It rocks...just a good pub...except wait...do they have a 2002 of Brooklyn’s Monster Barley Wine, a bunch of Cantillon, and a 20 taps of rare stuff from an event they just did....all for good prices served in 20 oz pint glasses by serious bartenders...yes they do. They have dedicated lines to non-beer nerd classics...respect. Brooklyn Brewery did a special for their 20th anniversary last weekend. More respect. Cheers Mugs! | 86 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 strowlands8 (5) Ontario | September 3, 2012 Great spot. I personally really like the laid back atmosphere, kind of a country bar feel with sports on TV. Really great beer list, probably the best selection I found while I was in NY, even compared to some of the places ranked higher on this site, a plus the best value by far. Proper 20oz pints for 6 dollars. HIghly recommended. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 ltdan546 (19) | August 11, 2012 Stopped in on a hot sweaty day this summer. Loads of interesting choices on tap. Slightly weird vibe (craft beer + 90s grunge + ball game on TV) but definitely friendly. Got some advice from a bartender who’d just gotten home from Belgium for our upcoming trip. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 luttonm (96) Belgrade, Serbia | July 29, 2012 Nice traditional pub feel but great beers all around. Great music too. Food menu looked weird. Reasonable prices and well worth a stop if you’re in the area. Great | 88 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 18/20 brystmar (13) Brooklyn, New York | January 25, 2012 Hands down the best value for craft beer in Brooklyn, possibly in all of NYC. Despite its proximity to Overpriced-Because-It’s-Ironic--burg’s main drag, Mugs remains the most reasonably-priced bar in the region. About half of their ~25 beers on draft are only $4.50 for a 20oz pour!
Bottle list is impressive, but typically outdated. It’s common for me to go through 2-3 choices before finding something they actually have in stock. What IS in stock, though, is typically outstanding. Last time I was there, I shared a 1988 Lee’s Harvest Ale with my friend for the unbelievable price of $15. Did I mention this place was a bargain?
To top things off, this bar ranks among the least trendy or pretentious in the area without being run-down or trashy. It’s open and spacious, rarely crowded (even at midnight on a Saturday in the summer), and very relaxed compared to its surroundings. All of this makes Mugs one of my favorite spots in the city. | 66 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 BMan1113VR (306) Los Angeles, California | January 9, 2012 Near the subway. Stopped by and met up with ChairMissing. Sort of an old school, slightly upscale sports bar feel. Big TVs, full bar. Didn’t try the food. Tap selection was decent, but nothing too special. Not a bad place if you are in the area, but not a place to seek out. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 LilBeerDoctor (208) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | December 4, 2011 A good stop in Brooklyn. This is a small but cozy bar with a grungier, but friendly crowd. They have a pretty long tap list, most of which is NY locals, but a couple other stuff too. Their events bring in some of the rarer beers, but I haven’t been to one yet. They do have an extensive bottle list also. I only ordered food once, as it is on the pricy side, and it was good (chipotle wings). Beer prices are pretty good for NYC. Overall, a good place to stop in for a pint if in Brooklyn, although I wouldn’t expect any crazy offerings. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 3/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 15/20 ChairMissing (7) Brooklyn, New York | August 31, 2011 I really do love this place more than the score might suggest. It’s my local spot and they have good beers at great prices. Relatively hipster free given the neighborhood. They just some the most horrendous food (even for bar fare) and I’ve had more than one experience with OLD IPAs on tap. Still go there all the time though. |
