Hi, magsinva! It was nice meeting you the other day and despite your commute we hope youíll have the chance to come back soon. Please, if you ever have a question about what you are buying, donít hesitate to ask -- weíre here to help. Likewise, if you donít see something just let us know. It was just the two of us working that day so we never really had a chance to restock, not at all surprised that things may have seemed a little thread-bare. Cheers! [PS: As the owner I did not want to rate myself but then ratebeer would not let me post. Since I wanted to say thanks for your feedback I just recreated your score. Really hope you donít mind.]

Located on the 3rd level of the building (there is a road that ramps around the building up to the 3rd level) in a small 10x10 space, I was pleasantly surprised. With a homebrew store, its as much about the knowledge of the staff as it is about what supplies they have. There have been some negative reviews of these folks, so as a female beginning home brewer I didnít know what sort of reception I would get. I mainly talked to Dave, though Derek was there too, and found them both to be very helpful. They helped me with some rookie questions, which they took seriously. I had accidentally grabbed the wrong cap for my carboy and Dave, pointed out my mistake, which could have cost me an hour and a half, round trip, to correct. While I was there Derek talk another newbie out of getting an expensive piece of equipment because it wouldnt meet his needs. The store was busy while I was there, but they still paid attention to me and usually asked if I needed help right when I needed it. From a selection stand point, they had the major types of hops and grains, tubing, mash pots, though not in great quantities. Iím making mead, so they had what I needed to get me started (except for the honey). My yeast has a manufacture date, but no expiration date, so Iím not sure what the other guy was on about. I didnít see any issues with the date on my yeast, but it never hurts to pay attention to that.

This freaking Derek Terrell guy is a jerk. I canít walk in the place with a question without getting some kind of rebuttal. Was he mistreated as a kid or something. He seems to always have a stick in in arse. I refuse to go into that place again. I mean, he is running a business...get some customer service skills jerk. He needs a punch in the mouth to learn some manners!

Derek is very knowable and helpful to new homebrewers. Store is small but packed full of everything you need.

Buyer Beware. All I could say is shame on me! I was in the area and just came back from my first visit to the store. They charged me $5 for dry yeast. I just came home to find that the yeast expired in July. Check your dates...It appears this store has no issue selling expired merchandise.

As of April 2007, myLocal-Home-Brew-Shop has expanded and moved into storefront #3 on the ground floor of the same building. In addition to extended hours, the new phone number is (703) 241-3874. Also, coming in late July of 2007 will be Virginiaís first Dogfish Head (pub) located directly across the street in what was the Seven Corners UNOs.

HBS located deep in a commerical office building. Almost gave up trying to find it unitil I went hunting for it on the fourth floor. Owner said they will be getting a storefront soon, so that should be better. Selection was decent I thought, though Iím not an expert on the whole home brewing yet so I canít accurately say. Service was perfect, as I was greeted immeditately and they got me what I needed right away. Deffinately a place to return to when I need more supplies.
