80 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 wimpyjoe (566) Manchester, England | April 23, 2013 In a small square set back from the main road and opposite the Magistrates Court. This pub has is distinctly modern in design and furniture, although sitll uses a traditional wooden decor. The real appeal is its selection with hand pumps galore including plenty of local brewers as well as an extensive bottle collection of ales. Lager drinkers are just as well catered for and the row of electric pumps are not the usual dross you find in most places. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 Brugmansia (257) Jylland, Denmark | February 18, 2013 Visited this place several times and I just love this place. Always friendly and helpfull staff, great variaty on the beers, and lots from smaller micros in the north, good condition on the beers. During the year they do their owm small beerfestivals in the pub, absolutely worth going for. This pub is a place both for the beer lover and the locals. A must visit pub, whenever I am in the Manchester area :-) | 72 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 Rune (319) Tromsø, Norway | July 15, 2012 Good range of different cask ales from two sets of hand-pumps on each side of the bar, supported by an amazing range of Belgian bottled beers with names displayed on a board. Modern décor, satisfying service, and a little patio outside where we were served well made pub food (visited, 05.07.2012). | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 Boudicca (373) London, England | April 21, 2012 An appealing two room pub with a great selection of well kept beers.
The New Oxford is just off a rather dismal main road but in a pleasant little square bounded on one side by the old Salford Magistrates Court and on two sides by once elegant red brick houses. The bar of the pub straddles two rooms, with the main room entered from the corner. Apart from some attractive art deco stained glass panels, a few Lowry prints (this is Salford, after all!) and some old photos, it’s fairly plain inside but homely, comfortable and relaxed, with very friendly service.
To add to this, there’s an impressive selection of cask beers. When we were there during the Winter Ales Festival week there were 9 hand pumps on each side of the bar with additional beers straight from the cask brought up from the cellar on request. The turnover was very rapid so the beer list was constantly changing and tickers were in abundance. One couple were happily occupied in the corner decanting their pints into bottles via a plastic jug and stashing them in a rucksack.
The pub serves basic food and doorstep sandwiches at reasonable prices but I can only vouch for the chips, which were good.
(Visited 20 January 2012). | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 Svesse (178) Hässelby, Sweden | October 12, 2009 Impressive pub close to Salford Cathedral, not far from Manchester city center. Two rooms with the bar in the middle. 18 handpumps with beers mainly from British micro breweries, another 14 taps with interesting beers from Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and so on. Just 3 crap taps (which I usually don’t bother counting). Oh, and then they have an impressive selection of bottled beers, mainly from Belgium and Germany. Very good pub food. Very friendly and efficient staff with a good idea of what they’re serving. Mainly inhabited by friendly locals, some students and one or two beer hunters. Lovely place, a must visit when in Manchester. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 Nightfall (39) Hamburg, Germany | August 21, 2009 [RBESG 2009]. One of the nice places in Manchester. Shiny and spacious place. Lots of casks and a nice bottle selection. Food was good too (even though in some cases we had to wait a bit longer, but then again almost 20 people ordered at once :D ) | 74 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 thewolf (139) Kolding, Denmark | July 29, 2009 Now, this was a fine place. Open and light. Lots of casks, rare ciders and Phoenix Strawberry on tap! Service was a little rushed... I said "... then I’d like another one", when the barman showed me an Anker Bok. Then he proceeded and opened it for me... well, it’s a fine bock. Good selection of bottles as well, though the list wasn’t really updated. We has lunch, which was okay, but perhaps a bit too small. Definately going here again, just for the selection! | 70 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 14/20 bierkoning (229) La Tropica, Netherlands | July 24, 2009 Visited during RBESG. Spacious pub with a good selection of ales and ciders and bottled Belgian beers. Had a lovely Ploughmans. Affordable prizes. Slowish service. Worth a visit when in Manchester. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Borresteijn (141) Amsterdam, Netherlands | July 24, 2009 Visited during RBESG 09. Pub with a great range of cask ales, taps (Czech lager and Belgians) and bottles, for fair prices. Interior is not exactly what I like, has a bit of a snackbar feel to it because of the brightness of the place, the pale wood used for the tables and the tiles on the floor, but that’s just a minor detail considering what you get in return for beer and food. Had a curry which was really nice, although it took them quite some time to make it. But hey, it was crowded with RB’ians, so no complaint there. Only thing that put me off was that the bartender said my infected Slaapmutske Dry Hopped Pils was meant to taste like that. Overall, had a nice time here. Worth a visit for beer scooping. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 chriso (306) London, England | April 18, 2008| Updated January 7, 2009 Can only concur with other reviews. Definitely one of the best places in Manchester. There is a cafe-bar feel but with more warmth and local atmosphere than most of that style. The balance between Belgian and cask beers is spot on. The Belgians are interesting as Tim gets them from Wyn at drankcentrale (Dochter van der Korenaar Noblesse on tap when I visited) and there were 8 or so British beers on handpump, of which I needed 6. Friendly and enthusiastic landlord. |
