56 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 4/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 14/20 goozen (54) Leiden, Netherlands | June 3, 2007 Situated in an old small city castle, its looks expensive but they have their own beers brewed in the cellars. | 54 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 5/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 12/20 worldbeertaste (73) , England | March 30, 2013 A cool castle that certainly has a aged atmosphere. Friendly staff with decent enough beer. The food seems decent. Not a bad brewpub. No info on their beers. | 52 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 3/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 12/20 deanso (205) the Hague, Netherlands | February 19, 2013 Service was fine on a Tuesday. I sat at the bar. Pity they only have a pills, wit beer andablond. 2.95 our for 33.cl | 40 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 2/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 4/10 OVERALL 8/20 jvdijk99 (26) , Netherlands | February 14, 2013 More a restaurant than a pub. They only had a blonde, wheat and pilsener available. Neither of them did anything for me. They ran out of their Bock and double. Didn’t have the food, just some snacks and they were overpriced. Don’t bother about this place. | 60 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 madsberg (50) Søborg, Denmark | September 30, 2012 Really not much to add here. Small range of inhouse brews and the best Heineken tab I ever saw. It pours water :-). Decent beers, but definately not the most ambient place. | 40 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 2/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 8/20 sic1314 (229) Leiden, Netherlands | September 1, 2012 Not sure why this place brews, it’s a very uninviting up market dining place where it doesn’t feel particularly comfortable having a beer at the bar. Atrocious service. | 44 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 4/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 8/20 Benzai (82) Oirschot, Netherlands | July 3, 2012 Very large brewpub. Lots of seats inside as well as an outside terracce. Old interior, some pianomusic playing when I visited. Only 3 of their beers available unfortunately, I would have liked to try more. Didn’t try the food as I had already eaten moments before I walked in, but it looked very nice. | 42 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 4/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 8/20 erickok (87) Tours, France | October 23, 2011 Stylish but lifeless atmosphere. Friendly but uninterested staff. But the craziest is that they serve Heineken next to their own brews, which sais a lot about their attitude. Prices are also high and the people visiting are I’m sure not interested in beer. Unimaginative place. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 Cunningham (247) Halden, Norway | October 20, 2011 Nice and friendly brew pub located in the city centre of utrecht | 56 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 5/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 12/20 Boudicca (374) London, England | October 15, 2011 Unique building and great location; friendly service; unimaginative beers.
The Oudaen brewpub is located in an impressive “city castle” (like a Scottish tower house, or the urban equivalent of a fortified manor house), built around 1300 by the wealthy Oudaen family. The bar is at street level in a grand banqueting hall with a raised area at the back, an impressive rococo style canopy over the fireplace and huge circular candle holders, such as those you might find in a mediaeval castle, suspended from the ceiling.
The main canal in Utrecht sits well below street level and most of the buildings have basement warehouses - many now converted into cafes and bars - alongside the canal. Oudaen’s warehouse houses the brewery and the part open to the public looks very attractive (gleaming old coppers and warm red brickwork) although I think the main business goes on in a separate room with a more modern stainless steel kit. There are tables outside up at street level and on the wharf below so in fine weather it’s a nice spot for lunch, dinner or just a drink.
Unfortunately, whilst the beers are perfectly quaffable they are unimaginative and, frankly, rather dull. There were three on offer – a wheat, a blond / crystal wheat (the filtered version of the wheat and a pilsner (Linteloo Gold).
(Visited 26 September 2011). | 52 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 10/20 Fin (368) Merton, Oxfordshire, England, England | October 3, 2011 We popped into this place on Mon 26.09.11. The weather was truly gorgeous so we sat at the lower terrace that offered some shade by the canal, though I did pop into the place, which was very high ceilinged and quite smart, I had a good look around. The beer was ok but nothing exciting, the staff were also ok but seemed less interested in us as we weren’t ordering food. It was fine enough but seems rather intent on attracting a different sort of crowd to the types of places that I would normally frequent. |
