86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 lethe (11) New York | May 30, 2012 Really cool Franconian-style pub that had some of the best beer and food that I’ve had in months in Germany. I think they had five taps, but three were standard pilsner-type fare. The Krug and Meister on tap, however, were absolutely excellent and my meal of bratuwurst with a large Krug draft may be the best meal I’ve had in Germany. Also some good Franconian beers in bottles. Cool, slightly trendy ambiance with very friendly service. Don’t believe they have an English menu, but the servers will work with you. Highly recommend, even if out of the way. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 Houba (13) Hamburg, Germany | June 24, 2011 A properly civilized place, with a capital C! Gives us Northerners an idea why Franconia is rightly famous worldwide for their session beers. Serious candidate to be the norternmost tap of Krug Lager. Great “Brotzeit” (i.e. wholesome beer snack) selection, I’m partial to the bread, the pretzels, and the sauerkraut & bratwurst, myself. | 70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 sbs (19) , Germany | June 22, 2011 Indispensable for those who won’t miss their decent Franconian beer at Hamburg. And they also stock two or three kinds of excellent wheat beers (Unertl and Gutmann). With the beers, they "import" very good bread and sausages from Franconia. Keep to the snacks (Vesperteller, fried sausage) because the cooked meals are disappointing not only for those who know Franconian inns and restaurants. Friendly service but cannot explain the beers farther than "dark" or "blond". | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 brugmanneke (36) , Germany | February 19, 2011 This is a special place for beer lovers in Hamburg, because is focuses mostly on Franconian beers, otherwise virtually unavailable in here in the north, and food from that region. The owner is from Franconia, so he knows what he’s doing!
There are two Franconian beers on tap (I strongly recommend Krug Lager) and two "normal" pilsners. The list of bottled beers varies a bit over time. Last time I went, they had Hetzelsdorfer, Obaladara, Schnupp, and Gutmann Weizen, among others.
Food is delicious as well and - as I am told by my Franconian co-workers - quite authentic. I recommend their sausages with sauerkraut!
You can go there to eat or for drinks only. It is located in the Uhlenhorst district of Hamburg, not in the city center, but can be reached easily and directly by bus. |
