Location is great but it’s a very small place where tables and chairs are difficult to acquire. Avoid if you are with a big group. Otherwise nice service, good bottle selection and always something nice on tap. Not a place for ticks but just a good, small bar in a central location.

(Visited July 2012) Cosy beer bar in the shadow of the cathedral. A fairly small place with a small seating area upstairs as well. Service was quite efficient and friendly. Beer selection is not massive, but well selected, I had the Duvel Tripel Hop on tap for example. The location means it’s quite handy for tourists (which would include most of us), so that’s a fair part of the clientèle. Worth a visit on a stroll around central Antwerpen, and then head down to ’t Antwaerps Bierhuiske, which is a couple of hundred meters away.

Bit of a tourist trap, probably the best option in the lee of the cathedral.

Great interior and location, with a more than decent beer selection, and some good beery food as well, had a nice omelet with fresh bread, a perfect combo with the beer. Small and friendly inside, old wooden interior, service could not have been better.

Paters Vaetje is quite well located, in a sense. It is in a tourist hotspot, so expect a lot of tourists. The selection is decent, offering the usual, well-known beers: trappists, some De Dolle’s, Malheur 10/12 and the usual Belgian strong ales you would expect from almost any decent bar. In short, a good place if you happen to be in the neighbourhood, but not exactly worth a longer detour.

Nice little beer cafe with a lovely patio right beside the cathedral in the town’s center. The beer list is actually quite impressive and, hilariously to me, is printed on a Coca Cola menu. Prices are very good, especially considering the central (read: touristy) location of this place. They had Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueuze for about €5, which seemed like quite a good deal to me, in addition to a lot of other obscure - if not outstanding - beers. They have free wi-fi here, which was a big plus for me. Definitely worth visiting this place on account of its fine location and respectable beer selection.

Geeks won’t find the list stunning in a town that has both the Kulminator and Bierhuiske, but at 110 beers and rotating selections it’s still well above average. Drie Fonteinen is there, along with several regional breweries. It is a local institution, albeit an often crowded one, where I like to escape from the crush by sitting in the loft upstairs. There are snacks and people-watching, inside or out. Well-worn and cozy atmosphere, complete with nooks and crannies and a fake monk’s barrel up near the high ceiling.
