In its own rickety timber building full of historic importance, currently with a Tudor style appearance, this triple floored pub is right next to the enclosed outdoor market area in the heart of the city. It’s a tight affair on the ground floor, with the bar occupying most of the back wall, leaving just a few small tables and seats in front. It packs in a good mix of cask and keg ales though and the selection is decent, and not limited to just local brews. Climb the stairs to either of the next two levels and there’s more space and more tables and chairs than below, situated on even wooden floors covered by Afghan rugs in places. It’s extremely atmospheric if you enjoy old world settings, and it’s probably the most medieval of places you’ll enter on a pub crawl of York. It’s slightly spoiled by some of the electronic boxes and wires adorning the walls, and the bright juke box mounted on the wall of the middle floor looks completely out of place.

The place looks cool at first sight, but the furniture could be better and when we were there there we a lot of large noisy groups which didn’t add to the atmosphere in a good way. The selection is good though: focus on English beers, but also some good Belgian beers, and a lot of different styles. Most beers are pricy though. In short, the selection is worth checking out, but I’d rather visit another pub.

Merece mucho la pena visitar este pub situado en el centro de York. Para mí, uno de los mejores de la ciudad. La única pega es que no sirvan comidas pero la selección de cervezas que rotan son bastante aceptables

Located in the old building in the York city center. Spreads on three floors, we’ve stayed on the ground floor which felt cozy and not too big. Good selection, some interesting beers on tap. Decent bottle selection. Worth visiting.

Set in a fantastic location in the middle of York and in a building older than the US constitution. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. They seemed to have roughly 15 beers on cask/tap and another 50 or so in a bottle list. Almost all of it was local UK breweries, and even had a couple sours on draft when I was there. Bar staff is great and the prices are resonable for the area. They have three levels of seating and it wasn’t crowded at all when I was there (around 3pm on a Saturday).

As an American, I’m a sucker for historic and atmospheric venues that enhance the experience of enjoying beers in public. Pivni fits the bill perfectly. Ramshackle and tilting, the building itself is worth a visit. They had a nice, tight selection of beer when I visited.

Visited 24 October ’14. Owned by pivovar who also own York Tap (and other Taps) Excellent sellection though didn’t feel as nice or as welcoming as some of the other pubs in York.

Pivni is easy to find as it’s centrally located in town. Much smaller than I anticipated but there is upstairs seating with the bathrooms all the way up the top floor. Nice selection and as being another Tap sibling you’ll find similar taps as the other bars. Friendly barmen and quite busy during an afternoon visit. Nice bar.

Review Sep ’14,82 Very popular bar in the centre of York, just off the Shambles. More choice than last year, well chosen and served. Excellent.
Review Sep ’13, 78. A tight, atmospheric bar right in the city centre by the outdoor market. Almost a corridor bar in character. The beer range is good and changing and the staff are knowledgeable. It has improved a great deal since our last visit. High up on our places to visit in York.

Quite a tight bar (downstairs at least) but worth dropping in as the range of beers is good in terms of quality rather than quantity. Quite an atmospheric place too.
