been twice now, once when smoking was allowed and once now that itís not. Good because this place was smokey. you walk intot he bar area, about twenty seat bar, with 8 or 10 booths also, 4 tvís in bar area. Couple pool tables in a seperate room on left as you walk in. Few outdoor seats too. A seperate dining area is there, though Iíve only looked quickly never sat in. about half way down the bar area on right side, little on the dive bar side of things. lots of ber cans and NC State stuff on wallsService been fine, no problems. Selection is ok, Carolina Brewing Co, Foothills, Big Boss had offering that I remember. Foods been good, burgers, sandwiches, a steak, fish and chips, couple vegatarian offerings. Overall fine if youíre in the NC State campus area, but not a go out of your way for kind of place.

Very good tavern. Only a few bad things. They charge for refills of coke, and they charge for water. Otherwise, nice people with great service. They have two main types of beer on tap--Carolina Brewing Company beers (frequently they have the rare and seasonal ones) and Anheuser-Busch. Not a college crowd (but whatís wrong with that!) except when NCSU is playing basketball. To correct FistFullOfCats, the bar has been around Raleigh since 1951, but only in its present location since some time in the 1970s. There is an extensive beer can collection that is quite stunning and marvelous. They also now have a good selection of scotch (I wouldnít really know but thatís what the owner says).

This is my kind of place. Pretty good beer selection (mostly in bottles), with seasonals and locals appearing on tap regularly. Ambiance is the real highlight. Players Retreat has been there since 1951, and probably hasnít changed one bit. Low light, long wooden bar with lots of fish tanks, great music, laid back atmosphere make this place feel like something out of a movie. The walls are lined with beer cans, bottles, and steins collected through the ages. Like a museum. Pool tables are well kept, cheap, and not usually too crowded. In fact this place rarely seems crowded, adding to the laid back feel. The owner is usually hanging around, looking like something out of a David Lynch film. Thatís just sort of the personality this place has. Even though it is near NC State campus, it is just far enough away that you usually donít have to worry about a college crowd.
