This place feels like being in my living room, sitting in my favorite chair, but with better beer, better service, and better music. It was comfortably crowded on an early Tuesday evening, and owner Steve spotted me right away and pulled me into a behind-the-scenes tour of the place, complete with tastes from the brightening tanks in the brewery. In fact, the building started as a brewery in the 1880’s, and although a few buildings have been lost to the quake, it’s great to see an old brewery used for its original purpose. The rest of the staff were terrific, friendly and efficient. Food was very tasty. A young lady on guitar was tonight’s offering of live music, which is apparently on at least five days per week. I counted 31 taps from 22 breweries, all local except for one from Brewdog. All this, and I was able to walk just a few meters to my room at their B&B. This is the type of place that I aspire to own some day. Oh, and they have goldfish! What’s not to like?

Old style pub offering 6 of the Harrington’s brews on draught. There’s also a handful of guest taps that rotate on a monthly basis. A few decent beers available on my visit from Three Boys, Wigrams and 666. A lively atmosphere, friendly staff and there was enough of a variety of beers to keep my interest over a few visits. A definite must visit in Christchurch.
2016-05-21. We underestimated how popular this place with be on a rainy Saturday night. Very cosy, it has a nice mix of seating and separate areas but it is VERY busy tonight. After standing at the bar for a bit we found some seats at the corner of the bar and made friends with a local. He later introduced us to the owner who was very friendly, as were the servers. They have a good tap list with a number of beers brewed in house. At one point a server brought by a platter of cheese and warm bread! (Apparently an effort to ensure people are not exceeding their alcohol intake according to our bar mate.) It was fantastic and took some effort to not take the entire tray! We ended up not staying as long as I would have liked. I think I would have liked to have come earlier in the day and spent more time here in hindsight. Great place.
Great place, walkable from the centre. Really homely neighbourhood pub vibe with by far the best range of beer I saw on the South Island. ~25 taps - all NZ micros, and they seem to change very frequently. Loads of one-off type beers etc. Food was really good too, though the chips were pretty average - usually it’s the other way around. Definitely recommended.
One of the first places I visited during my New Zealand trip. This is a relative large bar, located outside the city centre with a pubstyle appearance. Tap selection is great. Think this probably one of the best bars in New Zealand. Staff is helpfull, tasters are no issue.
Wow, really happy my motel owner at City Central Apartments Motel turned me onto this place which is fairly nearby. Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff, tasty food, comfortable ambiance. Prices r nothing special yet happy to pay. Lots of brick wood brass art breweriana sports n good tunes. Several lrg flat screen TVs w/ sports. Proly current best beer selection Christchurch. Wish I could return here. Soon
A really legit beer bar way down in the dirty south. Taps are essentially all NZ beers and represent a nice cross-section of stuff. The ambiance is like a British pub, really welcoming and comfortable. Live music sometimes. Food is well-done pub fare, really tasty. They also will hand out free bites of bread and cheese and the like around happy hour. If you’re down here in Chch, do not mess around - this should be your #1 go-to place.
