Roots is an odd pub, the night we went it was pretty empty, just one other group. The staff was extremely friendly and prompt. Food was forgettable, I honestly canít remember it. The beer was very good, but there werenít many selections. I would go back for sure.

Here years and years ago. Got the sampler and was throughly unimpressed with anything. Several beers I couldnít finish. I think itís gotten better and def deserves a 2nd visit as itís not far from Lucky Lab.

It does not get much more Oregon than Rootís. With the Organic Beer and the Inner SE Location is a must see if you want to know what the "Portland Culture" is all about. This place screams WE ARE PORTLAND.
Not my favorite place, but definitely one to bring some outta-towners or those organic health conscious this is the best place in town.

Roots is a very small brewpub with an island/surfer type vibe that doesnít really jibe well in a town like Portland. The place was pretty dead on a saturday night, which coming directly from the insanely packed atmosphere of the Green Dragon was a huge relief to me. The best I could say for the service is that it was prompt, the waitress was very rude outside of that. The other bartender was great though and we were able to sample their Epic Ale and Flanders Red, which were both delicious and a massive head rush. Their regular beers were not very good, however. Not sure Iíd visit again unless it was to sample Epic and the Flanders again.

Nice alternative no nonsense bar in a rather strange location. Think was almost industrial. Very nice atmosphere, no too crowded and we had fun watching the Simpsons with the whole bar. The beers are pretty OK and the food was simple, organic and good. I would certainly go back here when I return to Portland.

Dark, loud, and a little too much of a forced island vibe. Service was okay, but the beers and selection thereof was not so great. Lots of poorly hopped pales with their spiced beers being the high point. Boring food menu.

Nice place with a great surfer deco and quite raw interior. Unfortunately the brewer had just left when we arrived, so no chance to visit the brewery, but the service in the bar was very friendly and with an OK knowledge of the beers. Quite slow for a Friday night - not that many patrons. 8 beers on draft when I visited. Iíll swing by again when I come to Portland again.

Had a great time at Roots. We went as a family ate some OK food. The music was too loud but then say if it is too loud then I am too old. The beers where very good. I liked the stout and a the whole theme of organic brews. Sevice was the Portland hippy they can care less you are there. If you do not have the vibe they have they will not give oyu the time of day. Glad I hit the place when they (servers) where in the mood for serving. Nicely done Beer a must stop if in Portland.

Atmosphere here is cool without being overdone. Small brewpub with one guy behind the bar walk-up bar service only. Most of the seating is picnic tables. There was a live band on the small stage in this (small) place and while the music wasnít bad it prevented any conversation except between songs. The beer was okay, most were solid brews but just didnít find anything I really liked. The Pale Ale was nice and so was the IPA, but just didnít stand out in this town. The Heather was quite nice and drinkable despite having no hops. Festivus Winter ale was a great big malty winter warmer with a generous dose of hops, the best of the beers I tried here. There was an Imperial Stout on nitro that was pretty thin and really not good. Also a special Golden ale that had nice Belgian yeastiness with crisp carbonation and an odd tannic mouthfeel was noteworthy. Did not try the food. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable.
