Visited 4 or 5 times over the last 4 years. The place stays pretty much exactly the same (same bottled beers that dont move, same bartenders, same food menu, always full) but thats not necesarily a bad thing. 4 years ago I went to meet with some BAs for one of their first Bay Area meetups.
There are always a few interesting taps going. The owner has something to do with Palo Alto Brewing which is all contract brewed. They usually have at least 2 or 3 offerings on tap along with a dozen other interesting beers. The bottles are crazy expensive but where else can you find Anchor OBA or FW XI at a bar?
I dont go to Palo Alto often so Iíll continue to stop in when meeting someone in the area.

It is what it is. So so service, unnaturally crowded at night, decent beer menu at high prices. They do have a pretty interesting "executive bottle" selection if you have the cash to spend. One of the places to get Pliny the younger in February, which is cool, but otherwise there are better places to hang out.

Drug my brother, who lives in the area to this pub and had a great time. I had Firestone Walkerís Parabola on tap, as well as Pliny and some other California beers. Will be headed back to SF in a month and will arrange a meeting of friends for darts and great beer at the Rose & Crown. If you are in the area, you would be remiss to not visit. Sure, itís far from perfect, but has all the charm you could want out of a great beer bar.

Classic British pub. They had a solid tap list when i was there. The bottle list was really nice, but pricey as bottle lists can be.

No one has reviewed the Rose and Crown for over two years, so I had to speak up. Iíve had many great beers here. I had my first sour (RR Supplication) during a 2010 SF Beek Week event. I had Lost Abbey Angelís Share for the first time. On my last visit (last weekend) I had Bittersweet Lennyís R.I.P.A. and Sierra Nevada Estate Harvest Ale, passing up the Highwater No Boundary IPA since I had already had it. The food is so-so, and the service is variable, but Iím not aware of other places in the area with such a good (and changing) selection of interesting beers.

I stumbled over this place by acident - was looking for a place to have a tuna steak, but on the way wanted to see if the original locoation of Gorden Bierch might have something appart from the standard lineup, which they didnít - saw an ale house and found that they had 3 beers on tap and 4 in bottles I hadnít tried. Was hungry, so I had their fish and chips, which was edible, but not great in any way. Two of the beers were from Palo Alto Brewing Company, brewed under licence at Mayfield in Belmont - I have to enter them on RB - and the bottled beers were the three Iconoclast from Mayfield, though at 45 USD a bottle I didnít buy them and they had one bottle left of Sonoram 100 at 85 USD, which I didnít want to spend either. The service was OK, but the different waitors didnít know that I had a tab running, so they kept asking - thatís what happens when thereís 3 waitors overlapping with no coordination, but they were friendly and had an OK beer knowledge. The place is tried to be kept in English style - and for a place in the US the job is done quite nicely - except for the fact that they had no cask beer. If you find yourself in Palo Alto or the vicinity you should go - if for nothing else the seldom Palo Alto beers.

I go here pretty often but never for food, just beer. I mean screw food - Living in Palo Alto, itís probably the only decent beer bar within a 30 minute drive. The beer selection is pretty good and they do a solid job of offering seasonal beers. I would like to see at least some American brews on the menu however - I would say that 90% of the menu is imported. The decent list of Belgians is a plus however. It would be nice to see local breweries (Russian River, Bear Republic, Speakeasy, Lagunitas, etc) featured on their menu more often.
My main complaint, not that itís a major one, is that the service is average at best. Bartenders will sometimes sit there seemingly in a daze for minutes while people are waiting to be served. In addition, they are not very knowledgeable about beers on the menu. Last time I was there, I heard someone ask, "What is your favorite tripel on the menu?" to which the bartender responded, "I donít know, I havenít tried any of them." I really donít trust

Good selection of British beers. Nice patio and some good events (e.g. comedy night). Hasnít changed in many years and is probably the best place to drink some real beers in downtown PA.

Best place in Palo Alto to go drink all night but still have a good selection. Four pints of Drakíes IPA served from a cask coupled with a dozen games of darts is a good way to spend the night.
