I go to the Royal tavern from time to time for a business lunches. After each visit I wonder why I just donít stop at the Royal Tavern for leisure drinking, or to take the missus for a meal. Iíve only been there in the afternoon, service is great, always prompt, menu specials and a great draft variety. Just off the Italian Market, that can make a nice afternoon of shopping and ducking into local watering holes like this in the neighborhood.

If it wasnít for the hanging sign Iíd have missed this place. The bar itself is awesome, up to the ceiling and has some nice woodwork to it .... the rest of the bar has a great throwback feel with high ceilings, chair rails and cool swinging doors to the bathrooms ... bartender was a great help with the menu and tap list .... the selection was limited because it was a philly beer week event so widmerís it was ... the royal burger definitely held up to its reputation .... happy hour prices were half off drafts which is awesome and the food was def on average and reasonable .... definitely a place to check out in the city

Iíve stopped in a couple times and have enjoyed myself each time. Sort of an easy place to miss tucked into a residential neighborhood and without any glaring signs but there is a steady flow of people going in and out so you should see it easily. They keep the lighting pretty low, which is sometimes annoying but that is getting pretty nitpicky. Tap lineup is always solid and can move to exceptional from time to time. Iíve only had the burger here but it has to be one of the best in Philly. Service is always quick and thorough. Prices were on par with the rest of the city. Itís a bit out of the way for me but I like to stop in anytime I make it to this part of the city.

Visited on 26/05/12.
Back Street boozer 7 or 8 blocks from South Street. This place really reminded me of a British back street boozer without trying to mimick that ilk of pub!
Smallish narrow single roomed bar, we just managed to squeeze in at the bar it was pretty busy.
8 beers on tap (I didnít look for bottles) but solid stuff available. I sampled beers from DFH, Founders and Breckenridge.
Service was good despite it being busy and a I was offered a sample when a new beer came on. Not a place to go out of the way for by any means, but well worth popping in if youíre nearby.

A really amazing burger and not a huge tap list, but some really well picked ones on my last visit. Worth a trip for the burger.

Good spot in a different neighborhood to grab a bite to eat and probably have a couple good beers to choose from. We went on a crowded weekend night, and once we got a table the service was good. Decent selection of beers - not outrageous - but enough to keep you interested for a little while anyway. Food was above average and prices werenít too bad for center city.

Nice little bar with a decent beer selection. You wonít find anything rare here but they do have Ballast Point, Sixpoint, Stone, etc on draft. A few bottles as well. Really, the reason to come here is for the food and to have a decent craft beer while you eat. Worth a stop if you want something good to eat.

This was my first stop in Philly not for any beer reason but one that my girlfriend wanted to go here for lunch since they have awesome vegan food and awesome food for that matter. Decent selection of beer mostly local stuff but a definitely worth white place to go, if you can get there.

Stopped here for lunch last Saturday. Above average draft selection (Piraat, Stoudts Scarlet lady, Yards Philly Pale, Sly Fox Helles, Dentergems Wit, DFH Aprihop, Youngs Oatmeal Stout, Stone IPA) and some good bottles (LaChouffe, Orval, Delirium Tremens and Nocturnum, Chimay, Duvel, Franz Hefe, La Fin du Monde). Service was good. Food was upscale bar food; i had a really tasty grilled cheese sandwich with sweet potato fries. We just missed out on the brunch menu. Itís within Philly city limits, so itís non-smoking. Definitely worth a visit if youíre in the area.

Nice old bar with tons of wood. Recently theyíve been classing up the selection a bit, with sly fox, yards, wild goose, etc on tap, and some nice bottle from standards like unibroue, la chouffe, chimay. Heard theyíve had barleywine on tap at times? The service was competent, the food is pretty darn good for bar stuff, and the patrons are a friendly lot. The bathrooms are pretty clean, too... overall one of the classier beer places in south philly.
