Definitely an interesting place. Claims to be the oldest saloon from the Barbary Coast era. Old style fans that hang from the ceiling. Looks pretty shady at first, but the food is great, and for the price you certainly can't beat it in San Francisco. The beer is decent. They change their brews fairly frequently. The guys are pretty nice and willing to answer a lot of questions! Nice place!

Guess I never got around to rating this place either. Visited 3 or 4 times back when they were still open.
Neat setup with a large dining room in the back and a large dining room up front with a bar. The brewery is downstairs. They used to offer to brew your beer "for parties" (cant imagine needing that much beer for a party) for a fee. Never looked into it to see exactly how they decide what to brew but it was a neat idea. They also had gallon cube shaped growlers, which I wanted to buy just to have one.
The beer was just alright sadly, but at least it wasnt offensive. Not much to say other than that really, though I wish I had tried their malt liquor that broet added to the system way back when. Service was friendly but they knew we werent going to eat so they didnt pay much attention to us.

Visited Sep í08 before heading for some snap at House of Nan King.
Ambiance was fine, fairly busy around office closing hours and a good buzz - we squeezed into one of the last tables available.
Beer was pretty average but drinkable.
Always sad to see that somewhere has passed on, but this place was very much on the average side!

Itís a shame that such an historic brewpub in such a great location can produce such a bland/tasteless selection of brews. Everything was marginal at best, no flavor/ingredient in any of them to make you say "Wow - thatís a good beer!" The selection is good but whatís a good selection when all you have to pick from is one bland beer after another? And the bar and atmosphere is almost as bland as the beer. I stayed in San Fran for 4+ days just a couple blocks from this place, wlaked by it I donít know how many times, but after the first visit I didnít even think of going back in. Stay away.

Stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon, on my way to La Trappe. Great bar area, beautiful woodwork surrounds throughout. Interesting decorative fans, large mirrors, a even a piano, albeit small, are some highlights. Bar area is small and cozy, possibly the original bar top from the 20ís, which would match the soundtrack. Anyway, they had 6 beer offerings during my visit. I sampled 2 of them; neither the stout or IPA was outstanding, but both servicable. Worth a stop if youíre checking out the sites in the area.

First of all, it must be said that this bar is gorgeous. A marvellous wooden interior, beautifully yet rather simply docarated (you donít need accessories when the building does it all) in the middle of a cool district. It starts strong, but I expected much more out of this place in terms of beer. There were only 4 beers available and none of them were aimed at a beer enthusiast level. Basic, simplistic beers. Still, I recommend stopping in for the place and general ambiance, occasional friendly old live bands, smiling, joking ageing patrons. It feels as I imagine the good old days.

I like the interior of the bar. Real old time feel to it with all the original decor from the early 20th century, solid wood and high ceilings with the old time windmill like fan line. The bartender was a nice guy, friendly. The beers were only mediocre, on style, and there was no organized sampler or anything. This is a nice local spot that is overall a nice bar, but not necessarily a place that caters to beer geeks.

Although the location is great and the bar is rustic, Barbary coast era with paddle wheel ventilator on the ceiling, the beer is mediocre. I would have liked to love this place, but every visit is so-so. Oh well. 1$ samplers and 1.75$ half pints during the happy hour.

A building-site right now.
Pretty sloppy service and bland beers.
Almost no other customers were there.
The sample tray was very good for rating, but the tray itself was extremely greasy...

Located near chinatown in the centre of SF. Decent atmosphere, bit noisy because they were doing some renovation on the building. Nice to see the brewing going on inside the brewpub self, and you can even get a table next to it. Beers are not too special. Service was ok. Decent food.
