Aww, finally, Schlenkerla. A beautiful medieval house in the heart of Bamberg right below the Dom. The place where everybody meets. Can be ridiculously busy on a summer evening (as in: 200 people are standing on the streets in front of it), but don’t worry, you can always just get your Holzfass Rauchbier from the Stehausschank (which serves you incredibly fast) and stand outside or wherever you want. The beer does not need any description, Schlenkerla from the barrel is incredible - you don’t know what you’re missing out on until you’ve had it. I gave the perfect selection score because you come here exactly for the beer they’re serving and nobody needs anything else than that. This is the mekka where everything in Bamberg comes together. It’s touristy, but you’ll enjoy your Seidla meeting new people. And you can’t get barrel Schlenkerla anywhere else, so...
A real adventure of a place. From the beautiful exterior to the Barrel serving near the entrance and the regulars area, to the electric door toilets and out the back beer garden (of sorts) this is a fun place to drink. Tap list is limited to two beers when we were there.
Ambiance - Big German bar with plenty of people at any time of the day. Can’t say it’s cozy but it has the kind of ambiance you’d expect from a place like this. Service - Friendly if a bit impersonal. Selection - They had two of their own beers available at our visit. Food - Did not eat. Value - Expensive for the area but still very very cheap. Additional comments - None!
Large pub in historical old town. Located at Dominkaner St that expands into next building. Very busy all the time, touristy. I looks great, with great beer just not a place you can relax (unless you like noisy touristy spots). Beer garnen is prefred choice. Service typical for such place, neutral.
Sat at bench tables in the beer garden. Had beer only. Service was okay, but it was crowded, and the ambiance was negatively affected by a feeling that this is how EPCOT in Disney World would do beer. Okay, probably high on the list of Bamberg breweries, but just average for me.
The most famous of the Bamberg breweries, Schlenkerla drags in huge crowds of tourists and is usually packed to capacity. The bad news is it can be hard to find a table when you want to have dinner, the good new is that you don’t need to bother coming in for the food: it was simply the worst I ever had in Germany. Even a plate with meatloaf and boiled potatoes was a task too hard to complete for the cook, the potatoes were dry and obviously were boiled a long time ago and the meatloaf was not something to come back for either.
Service is typical: efficient yet not very friendly, but nothing out of the ordinary here.
Ofcourse this place still scores very high on the beer: even when there usually are only 2 beers available, they are of very high quality which still justifies coming in here. The other big plus is the fantastic interior: it just oozes old-world charm.
Come in here for the beer, but do not try the food. Visit around noon or in the afternoon to avoid the largest groups of tourists. In my opinion not the best Bamberg has to offer.
The history and ambiance are worth the visit, but other than that I wasn’t really in the spirit of the place (crush yourself in a corner, have the rauch shoved at you, finish beer, rinse, repeat). Food was pretty average as well. All probably due to the number of people that pour through this place.
