90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 19/20
Having visited this wonderful tavern at least twice a year for the last 7 years, I’m hardly a regular, but I love it. Yes, it can be touristy (unless you actually live in Bamberg we are all tourists), yes the service is, shall we say curt (its busy) and yes they "only" have 1-2 beers on draft. But the food is great, the history, architecture and atmosphere unparalelled and the beer is unique, wonderful and served vom holzfass (from the wood). Why would you want 10, 20 or 30 beers on draft when you can have the Marzen? World class.

Great place. Perhaps too touristic, but for this entertainment people travel to Bamberg. 10 from 10!

What a great place! I was very pleasantly surprised that Shlenkerla’s iconic rauchbier was so much better fresh from the tap than in the bottles found in the US. It was so good that I found myself having one after breakfast on a cold and rainy morning. The food was superb on two separate occasions. Highly recommended.

April 2013. I sat in the front room with the old stove and the blood-painted ceiling beams. I came for lunch with my fiance. Only one beer available, which was disappointing. High quality food, and it was not until after ordering that we realized the locals were all eating a dish that appeared to be a stuffed onion, and I wish I had the same. It was still a memorable experience. Souvenirs for sale, I bought a glass and a small bottle of their house schnapps. It is hard to rate the selection, coming from North America where beer bars have dozens or hundreds of beers. On the other hand, this is an incredible beer and for anyone interested in brewing history, you can’t forget people have been sitting in the same place you are for hundreds of years, doing exactly what you are doing now. I am happy I spent some time here. Service was ok, the wait staff was abrupt but polite; the lady in the souvenir window was very friendly.

Traditional, with deposit for the glass amongst some of the traditions, had a marzen direct from the wood, tasty and fresh, superb drinkability.

Very nice place, just what you expect. had a very nice evening with some locals. Good service and good food. One has to get used to the Rauchbeer taste. Krause would be a very good starter.

A very cozy bar/restaurant serving their own smoked beer. As a restaurant itself, it’s ok but nothing special. The dishes are german, and (looked) good, well made. But the beer is just the best, and cheap, which makes this place obligatory when in town. Having said that, I’ve been here only once, and was quick to leave after embarrasedly noticing the ’stammtisch’ sign on the table I’d sat down at. But the staff and people were friendly. They also have a small shop where you can buy some of their products & paraphenelia.

Went on Good Friday. Awesome decision, for the Fastenbier. Terrible decision, for there was no pork on the menu! The food we did get was incredible, but I wish I would have thought about that first. I really wanted pork. Fastenbier is one of my favorite beers in the world. It was pouring from the cask at a furious rate. I drank 2.5 liters.
The place is like a maze of rooms. All of them were packed with people. Find a table with an open chair or two, and sit. It doesn’t matter if there are other people there. Just sit and start drinking.
This was the highlight of my trip. I loved Schlenkerla.
