This place was absolutely dead when we visited, around 8:00 PM on a Sunday. It was me, my wife, the bartender, and one other dude. Pub-like vibe, with rugby on the TVs. Not a huge selection, I think only 3-4 house beers were on when we visited. Average Auckland prices. We skipped out after one beer to find something a bit more lively. Oh yeah, they have an attached room with slot machines.
A tidy pub of modest size with itís own on-site brewery out back knocking out some tasty offerings. Three fonts of their own brews and five other kegs with more commercial stuff. Also a fridge or two but I didnít inspect the range too closely, what with being in a rush and all. Fairly noisy but with a good atmosphere on my fly-by Friday night visit. Definitely somewhere Iíll revisit to try the rest of the range and update these here notes. I reckon itíd do nicely as a place to pass a few hours on a lazy weekend afternoon no problem.
I figured Iíd start my New Zealand trip by staying at a brewery, what a great concept. Itís an old listed building with lots of character. Staff welcomed me with tasters of their whole range, and a tour of the brewing equipment, which is visible behind the bar, with a number of brightening tanks in the basement as well. At the moment itís still a tied pub, so it has to serve macro stuff, and can only serve three of their own - hopefully this will change soon when their contract is up.
I over all liked this bar, it is the sort of place I would hang out in if it was my local. Has a nice friendly atmosphere about it. English looking pub with an obviously Shakespearean theme. Own beers were nice but not spectacular. Not many mind, most were Montiethís which I am not keen on. Food was great. Probably would not be my first port of call, but if you are in the area stop by.
Pub is in a good location of the Auckland CBD. it is located in an old building that gives it a bit of character. it trys to give a bit of an old style pub but could use some help. They had 3 of their own beers on tap with the rest being Montiethís. The beers were fairly run of the mill for theiir style, The menu has your basic pub grub selection but nothing I was interested in. On the plus side it was a good place to be stranded during a rainy Auckland afternoon.
