I missed this place the last couple times I was in the area. Kind of a neat stop. They’ve got the tap and bottle lists written in dry erase marker on the mirror behind the counter. I opted for a glass of the hoppy wheat (white IPA I guess) from the new Fort Point brewery in town. It was surprisingly good. Also got a taste of a sour stout from Anderson Valley, which was interesting but not good. Other than that they’ve got some 21A beers, the rye wine from Drakes, and some other random locals like a Faction beer. I spotted little bottles of Delerium and St Bernardus in the fridge. The top shelf in all three of the little fridges under the counter have good bottles in them. Below that is Corona, Bud, and Diet Coke.
I wasn’t expecting to like this place since I read about it in one of those "best bars in SF" articles. I assumed it was either going to be super popular and specialize in $12 cocktails and completely neglect the beer, or it was going to douchey hipster status. It was neither, though from the sounds of it they do draw the mixed drink crowd. They have an internet jukebox which is awesome. I’ll probably stop back in at some point due to proximity to Southern Pacific but this won’t replace Toronado or Zeitgeist for me.

Stoppd here on my walk to Southern Pacific. It’s not far from Benders, either. Beer selection is pretty decent, but nothing mind blowing. Some Anchor, Drakes, Moonlight, Almanac, and 21A beers. A few imports, a couple Belgian style beers (from ’Merica). A bit of an old school feel: red linoleum floors, wood frames and furniture everywhere, a couple pool tables... Not an amazing beer place, but would be a solid bar to hang out in.

Not sure what impresses me more, the 1891 establishment date, the friendly service, the pool tables, or THE KILLER BEER SELECTION!!!!!! I’m a sour beer fan and The Monk’s Cafe is one of my faves and Shotwell’s has it on tap! Great place to hang out in the evening or any time.
