Have visited this pub several times, at my first visit to the NWAF, I stayed at this pub :-).. I have mixed feelings of this place, at first it was very good, then it was a bit down, but at my last visit ( january 2013 ) I think it has emproved a bit again. They have always quit a lot of beers on, during the time of NWAF, many from smaller micros in the north. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. ( My figures shows the revue from my 2013 visit. )

Retro styled pub in the northern quarter of central Manchester. Quite cozy place to stay for some decent cask ales. There are two house beers from Facers and some guest ales – a few from Welsh brewery Conwy were on at our stay. They had their own beer festival in late January. Medium sized with good music, football, pool table and polite service. Should not be missed on a pub crawl in in Manchester (visited, 21.01.2013).

Traditional pub with traditional clientele right on the fringe of the city centre. Plenty of other pubs around too so can be part of a pub crawl in this area. A friendly landlord who places an emphasis on decent rotating ales. The decor isn’t the most inviting as it looks in need of an update, but if you just want to watch the football that they show then this matters little. Have been in here when the rugby league was on the screen too.

8 casks. Friendly staff. Good value - £2.50/pint. Nice easy going rock music on the jukebox and 50p for a game of pool. Nice.

Having visited here regularly since the 90’s, it does seem to be going downhill a bit in the last few years, although the cask choice is still excellent.

A basic working man’s pub with a reputation for an exceptional beer selection.
The Smithfield is on the edge of the “northern quarter”, where trendy degenerates into rough and ready. It appears run down and shabby but it’s freshly painted and clean enough. I must admit I was disappointed. Firstly, we’d just arrived from Liverpool where great pub architecture and lots of what estate agents would call “original features” are the order of the day. Secondly, it’s no fun pushing past a pool table to get in through the front door, especially when it’s already crowded with people taking their pool games very seriously indeed. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I’d heard great things about the beer and expected it to make up for any other shortcomings the place might have. However, whilst it was fine for one visit (there are 9 taps and, this being the time of the Winter Ales Festival, there were jugs of additional offerings available from the cellar), the list hadn’t changed when we went back the next day and the day after that. I’m not sure I’d go back as there are, in my view, much better places in Manchester.

The pub itself is a little rough and dingy but as for the beers a nice offering of around 10 pumps. The beers are kept well and a nice variety. The beer festivals would be fun to check out though.

Very nice hotel bar, that is one of the main stays of the northern Manchester pub crawl. The bar itself isn’t the most luxurious, slightly scruffy, with a pool table and some tables with plastic chairs. 8 hand pumps with an ever changing range of beers mainly from micros from all across Britain. Mainly well kept. A good seelction of interesting bottled beers as well. Very friendly and efficient service. Inhabited mainly by locals and the odd beer geek. One of the best pubs in Manchester.
