I’ve visited a couple of times over the last year with non ’beery’ friends. Seems to be busy often. Tap beers are mostly tied up with the macros, but I have seen some local breweries feature. No need to visit with so many great beer bars now in the capital.

Sitting at the south end of Cuba street is this swanky New American restaurant that has a half-dozen taps of local craft beer along with a limited bottle selection. A testament to how much set and setting influence an experience, we initially sat in the large open air courtyard in the back, which was full of smokers, loud drunks and other d-bag sorts. After moving inside to a side room off the bar it was a much chiller experience: quiet and intimate setting, simple but fun art on the wall, relaxing indie music soundtrack and no obnoxious assholes to be found. The reason I visited was to try a full serving of the Garage Project Pilsner after sampling it at the brewery, and it was such a stellar beer that I stayed for two and let my head sway a little bit. So ambiance could be a 2 and it could be a 4, depending on what you’re into and what your tolerance for loud assholes is :)

Mr Jimthechap and I visited this place to meet some friends with children in tow and so all around was children either chasing or being chased. There is a definite market for family friendly bars and this performs admirably in this area. A couple of local micros on tap, but mainly surrounded by macro taps. The food was fairly simple and the service friendly in loud surroundings.

A remember drinking jugs of Mildori Illusions here in a past life. A fair bit smarter now, and the outside area is still one of the best in Wellington. They make an effort on the beer front, but is not aimed at the beer geek. Beware Sunday mornings - kiddy madness!

Agree with Vas, random staff. got our food order wrong 3 times! good to see good beer in a mainstream environment though. a bit pricey and waaay to many kids screaming the place down... ok for a family day out but not a family day off!

Sprawling bar with something for everyone depending on the night of the week. The Thursday music quiz is particularly good. The beer range is decent although expensive. The food is standard pub grub quality, often slow and outrageously priced for what you get. The staff range from cheerfully incompetent to too cool for you.
