A pilgrimage for any true beer lover. I had a one day window to pick up some of the famous beer on a day trip to Belgium. Luckily when the calendar came up for that week they were selling westy 12 on the Monday I was going. Now I just had to get through on the phone line. Didnít manage it on the first day but got through on the second day of booking. On arriving at the Monastery I was surprised how in the middle of nowhere it was. Thereís a modern cafe to drink the beers and buy whatever 6 packs they have available as well as the cheese they produce. Overall the pick up was very efficient and impressive so now Iíve done it, Iíd definitely do it again. Website was a the hardest thing to figure out when to call to book.

The monastery itself doesnít offer much to the beerlover unless you are lucky enough to manage to call ahead and book a crate or two. A beautiful monastery where you can stand outside and look at the wall. Still worth it just for being close to such a legendary beer place. Walked around and found a small shrine in the woods just north of the main buildings. In the Vrede can have bottles for sale and is a easier place to pick up a few Westys then the monestary itself.

Deep in the Flemish rural land lies the famous abbey of St. Sixtus. The place looks to modern, but the beers are great of course. The food is nice as well, especiialy the Hommelpaptaart.

The only place to get the world famous Westvleteren. Hard to order via the phone booking. Service at pick-up was good.

The only place to get the best beer in the world, direct from the source. Some six packs available in the gift shop, and glassware gift packs.

Visited this a couple times with reservation. Itís a very beautiful place, as much as you can see. First visit was in 2006 and realized at that time I needed a reservation to get the amazing beer. Will try to get back as many times as I can before I leave Europe. I must see for sure!!

I was so excited as I drove up the small country roads approaching the abbey the wife and kids were starting to show concern that Iíd finally lost the plot. Once there it canít be anything but a bit of a let down.. After so much effort the drive through is well a bit industrial and basic.. But they loaded two crates in the trunk so Iíll forgive them. Note the employees serving up were not monks .. My hopes of encountering a Sean Connery in The Name of the Rose lookalike were sadly dashed.

Visited on Saturday 20th October.
We knew from the website that there was no crate collection available that day, it just stated on the website that mixed packs of 3 (2 per person) would be availble on the day subject to the stock lasting!
At least this meant we didnít have to waste many hours trying to phone through!
It was listed as being open from 13.30 to 16.30 and we got there at about 13.20 and we were already the 6th or 7th car in the queue!
We were served within about 15 minutes and the good news was that they were giving out 4 x 3 packs to each person in the car! Just the two of us but we bagged 12 each so really canít complain, way better than having to phone up endlessly!
