The day before Thanksgiving and the place is rockin! Small and cozy with plenty of delicious beer on tap. We happened in on a night they were serving Darkness on tap so our mood was a little brighter. Clean, high top tables. Great people. Small store. Sadly, no food.

Grand Tasting during RBSG. Tour and a couple free samples. Very awesome. Would love to stop back again.

Darkness Day, what a cluster f#(k. Stayed up all night so I wouldnt get robbed or attacked. Got plenty of Darkness but dont think I would do it again. The actual day event was nice, well planned. Need to rethink handing out the wristbands because self policing only goes so far.

Visited on a hot Saturday afternoon in mid August. Quite a way out of town, at the end of a dusty road in a sort of industrial area. The taproom area is fairly small, with low ceilings, painted cinder block walls, and linoleum floor.
One guy said it seemed like a generic high school cafeteria. Not really enough tables or seating. Many people lined up at the walls, which have narrow metal shelf-like counters. Very casual mid-30s "dude/dudette" atmosphere.10 beers on tap, four of which were taproom exclusives. Also, two canned beers. No sampler sets available, which is a shame. Apparently free samples are given out after the tours. No food, but a food truck was parked outside. Didnít see anyone buy anything from it, though. Large shop, full of Surly merch. Tours available; no reservations: you gotta be there at the time a tour starts. Taproom is open Wed-Fri from 3-9, and Sat from 12-9. The atmosphere ainít so good, but the beer is great. If you like Surly (and I do), you need to visit this place, especially for the brews that are available only here.

Stopped in to grab some shirts and glasses while in town for work. Fairly good sized brewery sitting at end of a small industrial area right off the highway. They have a little outdoor area with bags and food trucks. Cool tap room with there regulars on tap plus a few seasonals and a bender one-off. I must say that their brewery store was pretty sweet. Large selection of shirts, hoodies, glasses, and free stickers! Would say this is a must stop if in the area. Didnít have any beers on this trip, but prices appeared reasonable.

Visited August 17, 2013 for RBSG for the grand tasting.
We started with some free samples and a free pint, which I thought was very generous but I really didnt need that much beer before a large tasting. I did however sip my glass of Furious through out the tasting. The tour was a little different than the standard tour (apparently) where the guide told stories about the owner and how they started. It was pretty funny but it ran a little long. After the tour the employees participated in the grand tasting somewhat. Really nice people.
They have the standard half dozen beers on tap as well as a few specialties like the Urine Trouble and a couple of others that I made sure to try before the tour. There is a merchandise store in the tasting room too that I didnt realize was open while at the tasting. Cool place.

Re-rate: Wow, what a turnaround. Yes, there was still the obnoxiously loud music and frequent profanity from the guy leading the tour, but that is Surlyís schtick, so belaboring that it isnít my thing does no good. Once I got past that, I found the employees to be really friendly, the music in the taproom to be reasonable, and the facilities to be quite nice. Surly really went out of their way to help out with RBSG, and I definitely appreciate that. Iíll be back, and Iíll visit their new building when they open that too.
Been here a couple of times now, once for the Darkness release and once for a growler fill day. I havenít done a tour yet though, so will re-rate after doing one. This is located in an industrial park and the building, although clean and kept up well, isnít particularly interesting inside or out. Growler fills are done on Saturdays with the standard furious and bender, but sometimes they have seasonals too. The staff is unpredictable. Sometimes you get somebody that is pretty friendly, but often you end up with people that act like they are doing you a favor just by talking with you. Surly obviously does make some great beer though, and Iíve the tours are pretty awesome as well, so like I said before, Iíll rerate after a tour.
Re-rate: 08/18/08: I still have not made it on a tour, but after stopping by multiple times on growler fill days, I will add a couple more comments. Omar has been the only friendly employee, otherwise service has been pretty awful. Old rating: 58

July 2013 Update. You can grab pint and 10 oz pours at the bar now, which is very nice.
Visited for the Friday night tour on September 4th, 2009. Very basic warehouse configuration, with small tasting bar and seating area in front corner, production brewery everywhere else. There is also a souvenir shop shoe horned into a closet. The folks at Surly run the tour really well, organized and still personable - a pretty rare combination. 5 ~4 oz samples of 5-6 different beers. You are given chips, and the samples are always ready to go. Really never had to wait, and you can sample before during and after the tour. The tour itself is Omar telling the story, and he does it quite well. I really had a good time, and will certainly try to hit it again in the future.

Visited the tasting room on a Saturday evening. It was mostly full, but not as busy as I was expecting for a Saturday. They had 8 beers on tap and 3 additional beers available in cans. I was incredibly impressed by all the beers that I had here. Definitely the best taproom in Minnesota based on beer quality. Definitely worth checking out. The one complaint that I would have, is that they donít have samplers, but they do offer smaller pours (~10oz).
