While it was hard to tell with no book the selection of bottles here seemed to be the main draw. Like other decent pubs you start with a choice of about six to eight cask ales. At least was dedicated to Oakham with others being regional in nature. Service was hard to gauge as the barman disappeared shortly after taking our order.
This place feels like it came straight out of the 1930s. Worn furniture and railings are like stepping into a time machine. This doesn’t affect the ambiance but does give it a rough feel unlike some polished places. I’d love to return at some point to see what they offer in bottle form but suspect that is unlikely to happen with so many other choices.

Staple boozer during the later stages of my LCFC ST days (’01 - ’05). Paid a few visits post this period circa ’09/’10.
Trad boozer with 2 rooms and a bar separating them.
Small beer garden where beers tend to be stashed during the German BF’s.
Cask ales often from the likes of Abbeyldale, Newby Wyke and Oakham.
Good bottled selection incudling many foreign numbers.
Service is spot on - top boozer !

Occupying an older brick building on the apex of two roads, this has plenty of old style charm about it, and no shortage of clientele. The universities are close by too. The bar is central in the building and extends into both main rooms. There’s little difference between the two sides except for the pool table in the first. Real Ales are a focus at the bar and there’s a good selection. On the walls are infrequent beer related photographs and memorabilia including pics of the Paulaner Brewery in Munich. There’s a garden area out back too.

Best bottled range in town and around 8 real ales. Quality always good, and at a pretty good price. Does attract an odd lunchtime crowd. Occasional and good festivals, including cheese and cider. Well worth a visit if you can get across the busy road.

I never really "got" this place. Not helped by the rudeness of the landlord and his staff.

Great pub. Very cosy, with a brilliant selection of beers, some old fashioned pub games, and a nice relaxed vibe.

A very warm pub that dominates its street corner and pulls you in. Excellent selection of real ales as well as a rather deep continental bottle selection. There are a fair few of those I would not have mind drinking. Friendly service, offering a sample before trying. Comfortable place to spend a few hours. One of Leicester’s top 3 in my opinion.

One of the last pubs visited on the English Midlands ratebeer crawl of Leicester organised by Dan. And it’s a great pub; quite cosy, big tables, great bottles (like its sister the Criterion), interesting foreign draught beers as well.

Quite an old fashioned boozer but with a massive range of both foreign and british beers. Good Sunday lunches, too. I used to go to The Swan more before the Criterion opened. But this is still a brilliant pub.
