92 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 Mr_Vogel (2) , Netherlands | May 5, 2013 A must-visit. The place – and everything in it – is subject to the owner and his wife. Be wary of that. You have nothing to want here. Peet, the owner, will determine that for you. Paradoxically, this is exactly the beauty of this place and the perfect formula for an hilarious evening. The owners have a true passion for beer, especially of the Belgian variety. Peet travels through Belgium in his van to purchase the stuff for your pleasure. What you have to do is simple; go in, take a seat and tell them your taste. After some insults, folklore, weird stories or pseudo-scientific debates about the properties of beer, you will be served a lovely beer. The point is that you don’t pick your take, but explore the world of beer and get to know the unknown. Who better to guide you in this than Peet?
If you’d like some cheese or sausage to eat with your beer, just bring it yourself as Peet "can’t be bothered to slice it for you". He’ll join in of course. Otherwise you can devour a mountain of peanuts and throw the caps on the floor.
The place is charmingly small and decorated with beer caps and all sorts of beer related trinkets. The bathroom is decorated with them as well, but only of beers he no longer serves. Ultimately, when in Maastricht this is the place to go. | 70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 Countbeer (136) Best of Eindhoven ohne Brauhaus, Netherlands | April 19, 2013 Ok, this bar, or better, the owner caused for a strange experience in the late night we were visiting this place.
He called all his guests victims so I talk from victims experience. Didn’t check the beer card because I had seen what his web page said they had. The 2nd beer I asked for is what he indeed could deliver, together with a strange but somewhat interesting delerium ish story about all kinds of beer related themes. I must have spoken with him for some brief time due to only drinking two or three beers at this place.
It was misty of the smoke that night and full of drunks but there was lots of fun and harmonious feelings floathing around in this place. So, I am not sure about his selection since I didn’t check the beercard, didn’t get a house brew to try (the owner told me about the troubles he experienced with the brewer) and had a long conversation about beer themes in an ultra smokey bar (asked me if I had troubles with people smoking, not at that moment, but the next day, all my clothes...) Anyways, this guy can tell stories and I enjoyed it!
Btw: free pinda’s. Peel and throw away. Funny place to end the evening! | 66 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 13/20 kermis (85) The Hague, Netherlands | March 3, 2013 Seemed quite a lively student vibe when I went there on a Saterday night. Fairly busy and no seats available, also smoking inside. Nice enough selection of beers but prefer cafe Frappe by far. | 52 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 5/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 5/10 OVERALL 11/20 HeavyScience (2) Indiana | February 8, 2013 Not a fan of this place. The bar owner missed the mark repeatedly, and would not take my own request. There are much better places in Maastricht (R.E. Cafe Frape). | 60 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 12/20 deanso (205) the Hague, Netherlands | October 8, 2012 Good tapers and good bootleg beers. Easy walking distance from the train station. I had to mark it down as smoking is allowed here which detracts from the drinking pleassure | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 17/20 dennie64 (1) Maastricht, Netherlands | July 31, 2012 Nice bar which I frequently visit to drink 2 or so ales. You have to get in the flow with the onwer, but once you do, you will have a lot of fun. Try the owner’s girlfriend if you don’t want al the hassle. Nice atmosphere with 50/50 locals. | 68 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 14/20 Fin (368) Merton, Oxfordshire, England, England | June 11, 2012 We were here on Thursday 7th June 2012 and having read the reviews were well versed in what to expect form the owner (see reviews below for a taste of what he is like). Maybe knowing beforehand is not so good as I cannot make my mind up whether I liked him or whether he annoyed me, however Loz was not a fan at all and found him really annoying. I was aware that he would pick the beers for us, I told him that I had, had Pannepeut and Alvinne Mano Negra earlier today (had these at the excellent Cafe Frape) and would be content to stick in that territory, instead I got a golden Belgian ale instead which was a bit disappointing, Loz also didn’t get anything like she suggested she would like and Loz firmly believes you will get what the owner wants to get rid of, as she saw someone else at the bar with two bottles of what she had, therefore she felt that despite suggesting and giving some indication of what you want you will get what he gives you and wants shot of. So as for the owner, he clearly is a character and whilst his approach may work for many he would be better toning it down and tailoring it more to each individual. The beer choice looked very decent, however I was only partially able to pick my second beer, I steered it into a direction I wanted, not sure that I ever saw a list. The place is really interesting with beer labels and paraphernalia covering every inch of the walls. This was the fourth best of the bars that we visited in Maastricht, would I come again? possibly I would, but I also think I would be more assertive regardless of the owners reputation. | 100 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 DJ1963 (3) | May 21, 2012 Peet was both hillarious and scary. An earlier statement about not being a customer is absolutely accurate. You enter at your own peril (or as he says, "You came in of your own free will." He referred to me, my colleages, and everyone else who has ever visited his establishment, as his "victims." He scolded us for not knowing what we wanted, berated us for not knowing what it was we didn’t know, then served us three beers each (his choosing) based on his interpretation of us. Of the nine beers that made it to our table, he was right on target with eight, but I’ve waited a month and 6,000 miles before I felt comfortable stating publicly he was just short of perfect. If you visit Maastricht, and you miss out on this place, you didn’t visit Maastricht. | 86 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 MaartenRF10 (24) Wageningen, Netherlands | March 27, 2012 Nice beer cafe with knowledgable owners with a true passion for beer. Selection is mostly belgian and dutch beers. No rarities or overseas stuff unfortunately. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 digita7693 (6) , Germany | February 19, 2012 This place is one of my all time favorite bars. Whats not to like?
-free bowls of peanuts, throw the shells on the floor
-amazing selection of bottles, around 100?
-wonderful rotating selection of tap beers (believe 8 taps)
for example for christmas they had 8 different christmas brews mmmm
-friendly and very knowledgeable owners
Just cant go wrong here, I love visiting and talking about beers and trying new ones each time i go. I can only recommend this place and the experience that comes with it, if you visit once youll surely make a point of going again. |
