Pretty busy place in the front room on a Friday night but there was a ton of room out back. Sort of a dive bar kind of vibe and the clientele was very mixed/diverse. Loads of folks at tables outside enjoying the weather. Service was pretty good and the beer list was impressive. Cheap as hell. I liked it.

(Visited 08/2014): Tap & Mallet is located on Gregory Street in south Rochester off I-490. Parking is available on the surrounding streets.
There is a small patio on the sidewalk in front of the building. It sits on a corner with a hanging sign, large windows and burnt sienna paint. Inside opens to table and booth seating, and the bar wraps around the left side. Wooden floors and tables, and large artwork on the walls, with relatively sparse lighting. Taps are present in multiple places, and there is a nice collection of glassware from all over behind the bar.
Tap & Mallet carries around 30 beers on draught, with regional breweries like Jackís Abby and Naked Dove along with other domestic craft brewers like Green Flash, Bells and Uinta and imports like Evil Twin and Unibroue. Over 100 bottled options as well from all over.
Service on a weekday evening at the bar was good. The bartender was personable and provided samples, and demonstrated a good deal of knowledge about the beer.
Food at Tap & Mallet is good. I enjoyed my sandwich.
Overall this is a solid beer spot for beer and food in Rochester.

I see Iíve forgotten to rate this place even though Iíve been going here for years. I love the fact they seem to update their online beer list daily.(Best of any bar Iíve been to) The regular bartenders that know my face, know Iím ready to order as I walk up to the bar. Always a great selection of beers on tap. Once in awhile I get a hard to find bottle. The food is good too. Great place.

Had drinks and dinner here with family. Canít say Iíve been anyplace with a better beer selection. 20-30 on tap and 100+ bottles. They had 2009 BCBS on the menu, albeit for $18/12 oz. Service and food were excellent. Nice ambience with local art on the walls. Best restaurant in Rochester for a beer lover.

Stopped here for dinner after the Ribs & Blues festival in Rochester. Nice setup - separate dining room and bar areas would help to keep the noise down in the dining room and the guilt for being loud in the bar down. Good selection of local and regional beers, as well as a few left coast beers thrown in. Service was pretty slow (ok, very slow - even just getting beers), but the food was excellent. The oxtail and goat cheese tarts are amazing, as are the kimchee fried triangle things. Everyone in our group was very happy with the dinners, the price was reasonable at the end of the night. Definitely a must try when in the area.

Nice cool atmosphere, lots of beers and styles to choose on draft... many locals, some not so much. 1 beer on cask. Proper clean glasswear to boot. I got the taco which was huge and tough to eat but tasty none the less. Service was average to poor. The one bar tender seemed to busy to fully listen to what I asked for, the other seemed too slow. Over all a solid place, but not one that deserves as high of a rating that it has. I did not think prices were as bad as what other reviewers had though.... maybe I am just used to being closer to NYC.

Iím not sure if Iíve ever been to a better bar... bottle and tap selection was outstanding. Many Cantillon, Hanssens, other lambics, sours in bottle. Quite a tap list as well. Food was excellent, if a little fu-fu and overpriced. Beer prices were also a touch high as well. Overall, the best place in Rocheter.

Good selection of taps that typically favors locally brewed beers. Not a large selection for hop heads, and there is only one cask amongst the 30 taps. Food is very good - try the vegetarian poutine with a cold pint. Bartenders are generally knowledgable and friendly. Can get packed evenings and especially weekends. Limited parking in the back.

Nice downtown bar with good amount of parking for a city bar. Good selection, but expensive. Staff is nice enough, but more interested in talking to each other than customers.

8/25/2009 I went here two weeks ago while on vacation with the family. Our visit was on a Wednesday evening for a late dinner. We were there at about 8pm and the place was kind of quiet. A few people at the bar and two or three other tables in the dining area.
The building sits on a corner, you walk in from the left hand side and the bar is immediately to the left along that wall. There is a dining area off to the right which is where we sat. Not much in the way of decor, kind of plain with paintings on the wall each one with a price tag on it.
They had 30 or so beers on tap and one cask the night we were there. They also have a pretty good bottle list as well. I stuck with some regionals that I canít get at home. Custom Brewcrafters, and Great Lakes helped me out this evening.
The food was really good, I had the Mojo Pork, my wife had the Cuban, and the kids split a steak. Points off for no kids menu! My wife complained about how foo foo the menu is. Meh.
Our server was right on top of things, very attentive and easily found.
Great little beer bar, if I lived a bit closer I could see spending some time in here.
