The map shows the headquarters of Tesco. Like most of the big supermarkets they have a decent selection of ales, most popular lagers and plenty of own brands of both. They also do a good line in foreign beers in most of their larger supermarkets. The selection is limited to popular brands in their smaller stores.

I really donít like Tesco - one of the major supermarket chains in this country Ė not least because of their policy of buying up properties (including pubs) and doing their damnedest to put local shops out of business. We now have two of the small ďTesco ExpressĒ branches within 5 minutes walk of home. I try not to patronise them but, when I do, I very occasionally spot an unusual beer or two. (Last visited 11 July 2013).

Supermarket giant located across the UK. I donít shop at them too often - dont agree with their macho attitude in needlessly opening branches just to put smaller guys out of business. That aside the beer range is ok for a supermarket. Nothing too exciting but micro stuff from all over the UK and a spattering of foreign numbers. The UK stuff is a bit samey and lumped from a pool of brewers - cos this makes it cheaper for Tesco and they make more £££ of course! They donít tend to invest in local brewers - that would be too difficult for this corporate whore (yes you can tell Iím no fan of Tossco - but Iíll keep my ratings fair as always!) and they wouldnít make as much profit! Hoorah for Waitrose in this respect ! Again - local/regional variations apply in this respect. The range differs from branch to branch and despite the Tesco nearest to where I live being a mahoooosive store Iíve seen a better range in smaller branches so it can be pot luck in that repsect. Always offers available ie 3 beers for £5 from certain choices.

One of the best Tesco branches I have found for beer. Great selection spanning UK, US, Belgium and beyond. Good prices. If you are a central Londoner looking for a Tesco with better selection than those more central this is the place to go.

Iím not a big fan of supermarkets when it comes to beer. However this one always seems to carry a decent range and often gets the latest stuff in no doubt because of its size. Usually also has the likes of Rebellion and Loddon to represent local breweries. Its ok.

It doesnít make much sense to me to have a single composite listing for all the branches of a supermarket chain. For one thing, the UK is not particularly well supplied with decent specialist beer shops so, in many places in the UK if you are looking for somewhere to buy some bottles one or other of the supermarkets is likely to be your best option. Having to hunt round the many supermarket websites to see whether they have a branch nearby is not particularly helpful. Thatís assuming youíre familiar with the UK supermarket chains which, if youíre a visitor from overseas, you may well not be. For another thing, all the major chains now have a variety of formats, ranging from small local convenience stores to massive hypermarkets. In the case of Tesco the categories (in ascending order of size) are Express, Metro, Superstore and Extra. They also have a separate band called One Stop that comes in various sizes. And then thereís the Tesco online operation that offers a few hundred beers and ciders for home delivery. Not surprisingly, the beer range varies considerably depending on format. On top of this, even the big chains are getting in on the "local produce" act, so you may well find a few local beers - even my local Tesco Express has Sambrooks Wandle alongside a small & rather desutory selection of a dozen or so major beer brands. Not the most exciting but itís better than nothing. However, you wonít find that beer at all small Tesco stores around London and certainly wonít find it in branches outside London. All of this makes the "beers here" listing fairly useless.

I notice we donít seem to be following the unhelpful composite listing format for Whole Foods Markets, who now have nine outlets in the UK with, no doubt, more to come.

So, itís really difficult to know to come up wth a score for Tesco as a whole. All I can say is that, in some places, Tesco (or one of the other supermarkets) may be your best take-away option. Youíll just have to do some research on the supermarket websites to see which have what sort of outlet in the area, then take a look in at each to see which fits your needs best. RateBeer canít help you with any of that.

OK it is just a supermarket but it does have a fantastic selection of local, national and international ales. It is the only place walking distance from my home that has a decent variety of bottled beers.

No reason to go here for beer, but the food range is splendid. Haggis pizza in the freezer. Stock up on snacks here, buy your beer in the off-licence just up the road!
