A very cool place and if a little closer to me I would visit more often. Clean, spaciously laid out place, thatís comfortable to be at. Knowledgable and nice staff. Daily tastings of rare beer, today there was Prince Tuesday, Mo and Coolship Red, really? Thoughtfully chosen selection of beer. Not a liquor with beer, totally beer centered. Not a throw everything against the wall approach either, selections made with thought. At a busy annoying intersection and too expensive by $1-$2 on most items, but Iíd be back every couple months.

The Beer Temple is an extremely well curated bottle shop with a focus on stocking fresh beer. It is well known that they will not sell beer that is past itsí prime, which is commendable. This justifies the prices of the products offered, given that you know you are getting premium quality. There are not many places in Chicago offering 1 week old Sculpin, for example. The owners are knowledgable and friendly and provide a welcome offering for the neighborhood. My only regret is that I donít live within walking distance, although maybe that is for the best!

Great shop located in Chicago. The owner is very knowledgeable about beer and makes great recommendations about practically any style. Tastings are held almost daily of new local beers or beers not available in the area. Notable tastings in the past have included a six year vertical of Dark Lord, all Bourbon County variants BEFORE they were released, a full line up of Alchemist brews. On several instances, rare bottles have shown up on the shelves for free.
Beyond all of that feel good stuff, Chris is very serious about freshness and selection. All windows have been treated with a special UV protective layer and he fights to always have the freshest product in house. On occasions heís been known to reject shipments of product due to it being too old and has thrown out beer which was on the shelf for too long.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. Both The Beer Temple and Chris are great assets to the Chicago beer community.

The Beer Temple is a smaller bottle shop with a carefully crafted selection and well educated staff. They do tastings all the time of beers that arenít available in the area, and the owner posts videos/reviews on youtube. It really reminds me of a cozy west coast bottle shop (think bottleworks, beer junction, belmont station, beer mongers...) or more likely a European bottle shop as the owner has been all over. I really wish I lived a bit closer because their prices are comparable to Binnyís and Iíd rather give my money to these guys. One thing I really wish they had is a few tap handles and a couple stools/tables so you could hang out as well as get growler fills, but I bet the licensing just isnít worth it. Damn you Chicago!

What a wonderful store! Itís not large, but what is there is hand selected. Thereís not a bad beer in the house. I was visiting from out of town and asked for suggestions on beers that were not available in my state of Oregon. Chris helped me pick out about a dozen bottles, and he knew the qualities of each, matched to my tastes. Iím back at the hotel enjoying one of my new finds from a brewer I was unfamiliar with and couldnít be happier. Bottles are stored on the shelf but shaded and away from direct light. There are some coolers, too, for some of the stock. Foreign beers only where they are known to keep well. The hoppy beers are tagged with their date of arrival, so you always know they are fresh. The local beers are in their own section, and are often received the day after bottling - if you want fresh local brews, thereís no place that offers fresher. Chris was a delight to talk to, and even had suggestions of local pubs that have special beers on tap and when. If I were local, Iíd be in this place every week.

I was lucky enough to be able to pop in here twice while in town for work. The store was well laid out, spacious, and best of all it has Chris. I was also lucky that he was pouring some nice tastings including some tired hands. Chris spent time with me talking about the beers of Chicago and the scene in general and had a good knowledge of things that were on tap to try around town. It was the night before an in store event so he suggested to stop in the next day to pick up some of the new releases from the night before. I did that and once again the next day had a chance to try a few more samples of semi rare offerings. He then proceeded to convince me to drive up to Wisc to grab a stash of New Glarus suggesting where to go and who to ask for when I got there.
That is what a true beer lover does and I thank Chris and the Temple for the experience and hospitality.

The Beer Temple is the perfect Chicago beer store. Really. Kinda weird, but Iím thankful it happened in my lifetime. Why? 1) Chris and Margaret arenít crazy or nasty or both, and as a plus are both cicerones. 2) Youíre picking the best from around the USA and the world from the carefully chosen selections, from the smallest producers to the regional giants. If itís good, heíll carry it. 3) Chris freshness marks all the beers so you donít get any six-month-old IPAs, plus takes pains to order whatever is freshest from his distributors. 4) NO PRICE GOUGING ON RARE BEERS! 5) The entire store is actually designed to decrease the amount of light radiation getting to the bottles. Ask Chris about it. Itís geeky, and I love it. 6) Thereís a ďbox of beer of the monthĒ club (I donít know whatís itís really called) that Chris picks out, for a good price. 7) All the prices here are reasonable, and usually lower for the good stuff than anyone else. 8) Chris consistently uses twitter/facebook to update the new releases, so itís easy to see whatís coming in. 9) Heís very accessible. Iíve probably abused his accessibility with private facebook messages, but the net effect is I feel like Iím shopping at my friendís store, not a strangerís. 10) Not least of all, EVERY DAY there are a few beers open to sample, and Chris has no qualms about opening up his collection of the best beers in the world. Iíll stop at 10 reasons. But I could keep going. The only problem here? The rest of Chicago is finding The Beer Temple, too, and once Chris posts on social media, you have maybe an hour to get a bottle of something he got only a case of. If you miss out, which recently happened to me (I got there in 90 minutes from when he posted about a limited release, and missed it), console yourself like I did: get six bottles of other beers that youíve been wanting to try. Or just ask Chris or Margaret to pick them. Youíll win. The Beer Temple is destined to be a Chicago institution, like Hot Dougís down the street.
