Visited on Satudray early afternoon. Neither a modern pub nor a traditional. It was just german football match time so some BVB fans were included, we didnít mind. Tap selection was not interesting at all. Bottle selection was mostly german beers, locals, belgians and americans. We found some excellent Stone brewery beers for very low price so weíve drunk them. Staff was friendly.

This places used to be ran as THEE place to go for varied, hard to get, quality international beers - as a front to the infamous Ninaís Mini Market. When "craft" was associated with croqueting and Brewdog were a mere whimper compared to their stature now.
This was backed by a firm "loadsa beers from everywhere" vibe and German football over Premier League football on the TV with a decent fairing on tap.
However, the reigns have been handed over to a new crew and nowadays despite having a foothold in suppliers (Orval and co still feature) the focus has been less on hard to get gear and whatever stock they heldover (plenty of De Molen on the menu and very little in the cellar) from Ninaís round the corner.
The staff in my two recent visits could barely recognise the name of Trappist classics nevermind matching it up to the vast array of "proper glassware" behind them. As a beer bar Iíd expect some grasp of things like this - all for show - but sadly lacking on a few attempts with different staff on different visits.
The taps seem to have gone more towards "tied" lagers and ciders, including Fosters so thereís very little rotation youíre likely to see week in week out now - although the draught selection was never the strong point.
The pub itself is tiny, long bench along the window and a couch has been replaces with a crap dining table and chairs which doesnít yield much more floorspace. Try and stand against the wall near the bar if you want to squeeze in without having to sway for more than the barstaff getting into the cellar. The toilet have been miserable for years.
TVs showing German football bring a decent crowd in, although I donít think theyíve offered hot food (German Sausage" for a few years now.
Plenty of bottled beers in comparison to many pubs of its size offering "craft beer" but sadly their scope for the rich and varied has slipped, whilst their margins havenít. Plenty of better choice and value in the area now - including Ninaís, just around the corner beside Cloisters!

An internationally-minded bar with an apparent emphasis on German and Belgian beers. Not much on tap to interest the grizzled RBian. I didnít spend too much time examining the bottle list but wasnít overly impressed by what I saw. Not a bad bar by any means but I would probably recommend checking out other places in Edinburgh before this one.

This place is ok if you want to try 20 different lagers served by someone who doesnít know what theyíre talking about. Defo a market for such a thing, usually bell-ends. Selection has improved over recent years but the staff still suck.

Large Selection of Interational beers... but there all very standard ones, no Nogne, Mikkeller, Struise , Alesmith, etc.. No rates for me other than obscure lagers.. Nice addtion for the Common Man... dissapointing for the Conisuer.
UPDATE. The Selection here had imporved as the availability of the Big European names has improved in the Country. This can only be a great thing 66-> 76

Visited during the Oktoberfest season. Bar is pretty small. Selection is quite dull. The women behind the bar didnít understand me when I asked for the hefeweizen on tap - which was very off-putting. Bottle selection is a bit better than what is on tap, but still quite uninteresting - plus local bottle shop have better choices on this front. The look of the bar feels dated and a bit cheap.
Overall very disappointed I wonít be returning - surprised how high it is on the Ratebeer list for Edinburgh

2014-07-09. Tiny bar, tiny tap list is unexciting. Lengthy bottle list but not much on it that is particularly enticing if you arenít looking for German beers. Probably some appeal for locals but as a North American visitor looking for UK beers itís main appeal was close proximity to Cloisters. Atmosphere is cozy. Server seems nice enough. The room is overly warm for me. Not a terrible bar by any means, but there are far better options for a beer geek visiting Edinburgh.

One of the best times I had in Edinburgh. This small but friendly place had a fine selection of beers, not least German, and a very friendly staff. Lot of student types, some of them German and football. I was served my very first Dogfish Head beer here! Iím staying in the next door hotel again if I ever go back, cause this was a splendid place to have a drink!

Small place with little seating. Iím glad I was there during the day and not on a weekend evening - I canít imagine how that would be. Limited selection of beers on tap, but luckily lots more on bottle. Decor-wise I have to say that - despite how fun it is to sit and pick out beers youíve tried, from the wallpaper-movif - it really doesnít do the place any favours. I doubt Iíll be back - not because itís bad, but because there are much better places.

Smallish bar located near central Edinburgh with an extensive bottled beer list and some beers on tap. Screen showing football and not too busy when visited mid-week.
