I canít begin to imagine a better situation than Civil Life. Itís in a light industrial area of south StL, on the edge of a solid blue collar residential neighborhood. The building is a metal shed constructed warehouse with a gravel beer garden in front, with German festival style picnic benches built by the owner and his crew. The spartan pub itself is in what was probably the office area, and reminds me of the reception area of St. Bernardus in Watou. Thereís a chain link fence separating the brewing operation from a seating area outside the pub, but inside the building. Currently, they only have seven beers on tap, but each is incredibly delicious for being session beers. A very limited food menu largely depends on what Mike, one of the crew, brings in that day. Since the artisanal bakery, Companion, is right down the street, you can count of some of the best baked bread in North America. Highly recommended.
UPDATE: A new addition to the team, Brendan, formerly of Duffís, has brought the culinary offerings to new heights. The brewmaster has also brought out newer, bigger beers...Big American Stout and Big American Brown, both over 6% and tastier. I didnít think that I could like this place more, but I do!

When looking up the heavy hitters in the St. Louis beer scene donít forget about the Civil Life down on the south side. Kinda a industrial looking building at first but then you notice the awesome wrap around bier garden complete with communal seating. There are 10 beers on tap at $2.50 a half pint and $5 a full pint. Growlers are available as well. The beers are either English pub ales or German lagers. Simple drinking beers and nothing over 5% ABV. Food is decent and they are now open on Sundays serving soups. Overly friendly staff is also a plus. When sitting outside you donít even have to go inside for a refill. Just find the little "drive thru" window and ring the bell. Nice little place for meeting and conversation. There are no TVís or loud blaring music. A far cry from the dive bars that south city is known for.

Nice place. Good beer. Very friendly and helpful staff. I sampled number of their beers and the chap serving was very informed and helpful. A bit spartan, but what they do is beer.

Visited on a Friday afternoon. Fairly busy. Service was very good. Bartender knew his stuff. About 10 of their beers on tap. Smallest size available was 1/2 pint. Did not try their food. Nice place to visit. A little difficult to find.

I really cant recommend these folks enough. Fantastic malty brews, excellent service and a killer all wood pub area to drink. Jake (I believe the owner) was incredibly gratious and really knew the local brewing scene. I really recommend the English Bitter!

Visited here as a part of a 9-brewery weekend tour of the St. Louis beer scene. I didnít know what to think of Civil Life when we decided to visit, because I hadnít heard much about them, but I was pleasantly surprised. This was the 2nd best brewery in our 9-brewery weekend. Very cool place, with a cool pub type atmosphere. Beers were good - I am not usually a fan of english bitters, but theirís was one of my favorite. A definite go-to place in St. Louis. One small downside is that they donít do sample trays and the smallest pour is 8oz, but their beers are good, so its worth it.

This place rocks. Wildly exceeded my expectations. It sits in the middle of a working-class city neighborhood, in a fairly humble looking repurposed urban building, but with a nice wooden-fenced beer garden in front, and an attractive brick and wrought-iron walkway. Indoor ambiance was awesome. Long approachable bar with the drink and food offerings simply and clearly marked. Small but extremely high-quality selection of each. Vast collection of style-specific glassware. Iíve been hunting a British nonic half-pint glass for years, and theyíve got a whole wall section full of íem! Beautiful woodwork, intelligently laid-out space which seems to keep going and going in each direction: a dart room, a space for blugrass jam-session, a loft area, the bright and shiny brewery through glass. Service was great, the beers look, smell and taste exactly as they should, nothing esoteric or overly imaginative, but no flaws either which is remarkable. Guys, they have a true-to-style English Mild on tap, címon! I love this place and plan to return often to taste everything they ever make.

Lovely bright beers built for thirsty people. I mean, really, a brewpub built for neighborly conversation and specializing in session beers. I wish Iíd thought of it. Actually I did think of it, but thatís not my line of work. Like the beers, food is simple but quality. There is a TV but it only switches on for emergencies. This is not a brewery within a pub, but literally a pub within a brewery. And there are darts. Very friendly people, reasonable prices. Five or six draughts usually, I think. One of those places that makes me want to look for a local job and move in down the street.

Visited with family on a Saturday lunch break Moderate crowd Neat little community seating and bar area in a hard to find (without GPS) industrial area. The service here was fairly friendly, but odd that we had to double order our food. Whatever. The beer wasnt the best -- seemed pretty much like home brew, but the warm environment and really good, fresh, yet simple food was enough to say itís worth a visit. Brewery #573.
