I liked this place a lot more than I thought I would. They really had a great draft beer line up. So many times places with over 50 taps get lazy and end up with a bunch of filler crap. Not so here. A number of pretty obscure offerings as well. One knock: better bring your drinking shoes...they only serve large glasses (imperial pints). So if you want to try a bunch of different stuff, it’s kind of hard when you’re throwing back 20 oz’s a pop. Would be nice to see 10oz/12oz schooners. I would have stayed longer & spent more.

Ginger Man NYC is located on E 36th Street between 5th and Madison. The exterior was covered with scaffolding that had a sign hanging from it.

The interior is dimly lit with wooden floors and a wooden bar. Shaded lamps along the bar and chandeliers. Beige walls with a few large beer-related posters. Behind the bar the tap handles are visible, and there are a couple chalkboards listing the beers. One of them had a hand-drawn polar bear on my visit too.

The draught selections numbers 70, with local and regional selections from Captain Lawrence (a namesake Ginger Man beer), Peekskill, Grimm, Wandering Star, Empire and Barrier. Other domestic craft breweries like Great Divide, Maine Beer and Perennial. Flights of four are available. The bottled selection consists of over 100, with breweries from the USA and all over the world, including Ballast Point, Alesmith, Maine Beer, Bruery and Orval. Some vintage bottles too.

Service on a somewhat busy weeknight at the bar was good. The bartender (who I assume is a Cicerone) was knowledgeable about the beers he was serving and made recommendations for the surrounding area.

My colleague and I did not have any food on our visit.

Overall I give the nod to Rattle N Hum as far as favorite bar in downtown NYC, and favor the Houston location but I would still definitely make it a point to stop here on future visits.

Another great classic beer place in Manhattan New York. Just a stone throw from Empire State Building. Due to location it’s quite expensive and crowded. However, the selection is fantastic. Paper menus and flights available. The decoration is classic - old stylish elegant.

Lunch rate. Lots of different taps offered, plenty of bottles, growlers to go as well. Sample trays offered if you need to get your tick on. Pricing was lower than other bars in the area. Had pretzels, charcuterie, and kettle chips. All were very serviceable bar snacks, nothing terribly interesting but again, not that pricey. Staff was friendly, nice layout and plenty of space, at least during lunch time.

I will definitely be returning to Ginger Man. The vaulted ceilings and large amount of space between the bar and any other table behind it make this bar feel enormous and very spacious. They have a very extensive draft list, and they are serious about their casks (two at all times). Their bottle list is also really impressive, and you can take it to go (I’m not from NY...this is probably normal). I will be returning to the Ginger Man before and after evenings at MSG. It’s worth a visit, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s an absolutely must visit.

When I visited: Late September 2013. What I had: Victory Festbier, Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA, and Peak Organic Fresh Cut Pilsner on tap, a few glasses of Coopers Creek Sauvignon Blanc for my partner. What I liked: Beautiful, spacious bar with ample seating, well laid out beer menu, very impressive draught and cask list, fast service, extensive wine options, growlers to go, bartender (perhaps the owner?) was not only chatty and welcoming but also allowed us to eat take-out inside the bar since the kitchen was closed. What I disliked: Aside from not being able to order any food, nothing. Would I go back? Yes. The Ginger Man is a wonderfully cozy pub with excellent service and a top-notch beer menu. A mandatory stop for any beer geek visiting NYC. Overall Rating: 94

Nice and cozy atmosphere, knowledgeable staff about the beers. It was a friday night so it was obviously really crowded, very good beer selection.

Nicely lit place that was comfortable and not overcrowded. Very good service with knowledgeable staff. Selection was outstanding. The only tick off a full score is that they have a lot of agreement with certain brewers to not sell growlers of take out beer. I found it unusual that I can buy take our Maine beer in PA but not in NY. Have a nice sandwich (Reuben) that was a nice size for the price. It was a bit pricey but we did buy a growler to take home and had a good number of drinks. Very fun spot that I will definitely go back to if we visit NYC again.

Classic midtown Beer bar. Lots of good beers, some rare, some popular and now, in manhattan, easily accessible. Very straight-laced, midtown money sort of bar and the clientele seems to follow suit. Good beers, good service, but really not my scene.

Located in a very busy part of Manhattan, the Ginger Man gathers tens of young adults on a warm Friday night. The selection is impressive, featuring both US and imported brews. More than 20 draughts, including some features seasonals. Quick and friendly service. A little to noisy but definitely worth a visit.

Awesome decor when you walk in, huge 20 foot ceilings, comfy chairs and couches along with traditional tables. Huge private room that looks great for parties. 70 beers on tap, 2 casks and about 50 bottles. Thankfully they do tasters of 4 so you can get through a decent chunk of them. About a third of the beers are NY locals, the rest are either solid beers or harder to find. No real all stars on today but I was still happy. The bottle list was weak, not sure why they bothered to just provide easily to find standards. The server was cheerful, but not overly conversant on a dead day, not outwardly engaging about beer. The food smells outstanding, eat one of their pretzels. A decent spot overall, but one of the better ones in NYC to come tick or just enjoy a comfortable surrounding.
