Yeah, this place is good. Great room, bartenders knew their stuff, amazing selection. Too pricy, I suppose, but a great place.

Stopped in here right after Rattle since it was so close by. Atmosphere was hopping. As we entered we were greeted with a mass of people four deep at the bar. I almost turned around and walked back out but I saw a small space at the end of bar to stand in so we went for it. Quality seemed pretty high. Selection was killer, I was finally able to try my first Peekskill beer so that was a big plus. Prices were high but thats the norm in this city. Service was slow but with that many people I could understand a bit. After trying to get a second beer for almost ten minutes we were over it and decided to bag it and head somewhere else. Overall I would like to return in the future and give it another go, hopefully with a lot less people around.

Big spacious place with a speakeasy sort of vibe. Big tap and bottle selection. Friendly staff. Seems like the place to be.

2014-04-18. We arrived around 8 or 9 on a Friday night and it was understandably busy. We found a couch in the "lounge" area which was notable quieter than the main bar at first and pretty comfortable. The lounge didn’t have as much charm/character as the main room but we appreciated the lower volume - at least until the quiet group beside us was replaced by a larger louder group. Server was friendly and helpful, we didn’t particularly test her beer knowledge. We shared a charcuterie and cheese plate that was delicious, and seemed reasonably priced for the size/quality. Tap list was pretty solid with a good representation of styles and breweries. There were not a whole lot of crazy rarities, though there was good representation of smaller NY area breweries which were rarities for us. (Having said that almost everything we had had fewer than 30 ratings on Ratebeer!) The noise was a downside for me, but if I were bringing a group for a night out the "bustling" nature of the evening might become a plus. I’d definitely come back but and afternoon visit would likely suit my crusty old fart tendencies more :)

Ginger Man NYC is located on E 36th Street between 5th and Madison. The exterior was covered with scaffolding that had a sign hanging from it.
The interior is dimly lit with wooden floors and a wooden bar. Shaded lamps along the bar and chandeliers. Beige walls with a few large beer-related posters. Behind the bar the tap handles are visible, and there are a couple chalkboards listing the beers. One of them had a hand-drawn polar bear on my visit too.
The draught selections numbers 70, with local and regional selections from Captain Lawrence (a namesake Ginger Man beer), Peekskill, Grimm, Wandering Star, Empire and Barrier. Other domestic craft breweries like Great Divide, Maine Beer and Perennial. Flights of four are available. The bottled selection consists of over 100, with breweries from the USA and all over the world, including Ballast Point, Alesmith, Maine Beer, Bruery and Orval. Some vintage bottles too.
Service on a somewhat busy weeknight at the bar was good. The bartender (who I assume is a Cicerone) was knowledgeable about the beers he was serving and made recommendations for the surrounding area.
My colleague and I did not have any food on our visit.
Overall I give the nod to Rattle N Hum as far as favorite bar in downtown NYC, and favor the Houston location but I would still definitely make it a point to stop here on future visits.
