60 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 12/20 rejtable (58) Ontario | June 4, 2012 Love the basement, no interest in the main floor. Great spot to enjoy some fine Granite beer, and usually solid pub food. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 DuffMan (217) the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta | July 7, 2011 Charming house/pub, dark downstairs but we sat on the airy patio. Food is a choice of traditional pub fare (I had salt cod cakes and homemade baled beans, which were awesome) and slightly upscale maritime-influenced food. There were 10 people at our table, and every food order was delicious. Beers are British style and milder in character, but generally decent. Lots of MacCauslan on tap too, including a phenomenal cider. Nice spot. | 80 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 Mandrake (14) Chester, Nova Scotia | June 18, 2010 Beautiful little pub downstairs, with really good food and well-handled beers. Selection isn’t great, but it’s miles better than average in the area, and with some real standouts. Nice people, generally quiet enough to think. Top drawer, in my books. | 66 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 5/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 15/20 Atheist_Peace (21) Halifax, Nova Scotia | May 21, 2010 The atmosphere here is great. It’s olde style british pub (downstairs) with a fancy dining room upstairs. The few times I’ve been here the service has been fairly stellar, although the staff doesn’t really seem to know anything about beer besides what they have. Selection is heinous, but still above par for the local market with dominantly McAuslan products and the local standard brews. Pretty good value, you can usually stave off starvation and indulge in a pint or three for under $40. | 36 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 3/10 SELECTION 6/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 3/10 OVERALL 6/20 TheCommodore (9) Ontario | May 20, 2010 Cliche, drab, bad staff. | 64 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 8/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 13/20 mabel (211) Toronto, Ontario | April 25, 2009 Visited on a Monday afternoon back in November, they were playing fun oldies rock music upstairs in the big old dining room, and similar downstairs in the dungeony student bar. Didn’t try the food. Taps were interesting enough (mostly Granite and McAuslan and other local brews). Service was friendly, but could also afford to be on a quiet afternoon. Would be interesting to re-visit the basement on a busier night. Extra points for rich historical values. | 66 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 7/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 Beershine (593) The Sunshine State, Florida | September 27, 2008 What can be better than drinking in the basement of a 1834 heritage house in Halifax? Downstairs is where it’s at. The outdoor patio is nice but lacks the special character of the basement. Is dark, cozy, and very English-seeming. Has the Granite array draught, all were fresh when I was there but heard rumors that isn’t always the case. I really enjoyed sipping a few pints of Granite in here even if it was mainly empty. | 78 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 17/20 GreenWall (3) Halifax, Nova Scotia | February 6, 2008 Good food, real ale, nice building. Not a great selection of beers, but they have Granite on cask and a couple nice McAuslans. My favourite pub to go to for a meal. | 72 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 9/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 glennmastrange (43) hobe sound, Florida | January 28, 2008 It smelled like pee pee when I first walked in, but friendly and knowledgable service, cozy atmosphere, good beer on draught, and pretty good food made up for it.Tried my first draught cider here, not too bad. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 17/20 EKGoldings (14) Radford, Virginia | September 26, 2007 I used to hang out here after it opened many moons ago because I lived just down the street. I went back last trip to hlfx to chat with some friends and drink a few beers. Friendly wait staff and patrons .. a nice place to hang and sip a few, especially if you’re located on this end of Barrington. |
