Old school pub vibe (bar towels, patterned carpets, pump clips on the walls) with a craft beer twist. Kernel and Magic Rock on keg, Crouch Vale and various others on cask.
Very cramped toilets - got to know the patrons a bit better than expected. Service was good overall. Lots of people brought their own glasses/man-tankards - this seems to be accepted by staff.
I didnít get food but perhaps should have done as the neighbouring Chinese was pretty average.
Not perfect, but certainly close to the type of local we all dream of...and they serve thirds!

Lovely old characterful pub. Truly part of our pub heritage that should be treasured forever. Fantastic homely atmosphere with both staff and locals warm and engaging.
There are a few taps here with a very good selection of beers. On my visit, Arbor, Brodies and even a Mikkeller beer! From the pump clips on the wall its clear that Arbor, Raw, Dark Star, Marble and Brodies are favourites. There has also been beers from Oakham, Titanic and many other quality brewers. They are not afraid to take beer from new breweries either.
The folk of Carlshalton are well looked after here!
On my visit there was a great mini beer fest in a tent put out the back. The beers were in excellent condition. One of those rare places where casks are a real joy. The food was laid on free by a local cheese merchant and it was great (this part of meet the brewer - Arbor)
When it got a little chilly in the tent there was a lovely open fire back in the pub to warm your cockles.
Truly a lovely pub. There are only two things wrong with it - too many barstools and the fact that this pub is not my local!

Iím surprised this place was not on Ratebeer before! Itís located right next to Carshalton station. You could easily walk past it, as it looks like a fairly standard pub from the outside. Inside itís traditional and cosy, with lots of period features - fireplace, old signage and pictures of boats. There is even a billiards room in the back and a small patio area! There are 12 beers on tap - 7 cask beer, 3 cider and 3 keg. The tap focus is on microbreweries such as Ascot, Darkstar, Hardknott, Windsor & Eaton to name but a few. No crap on tap, so the keg beers include Williams Bro Ceildh and Hacker-Pschorr Munchener Hell instead of Fosters. The website actually has a "Beer-Cam", which is continually updated. They also have an ever changing contemporary bottle list, which included Kernel, Magic Rock, Bristol Beer Factory, Orval.... Food is traditional and good value, but still very tasty - we went for the gigantic ploughman "salad". Friendly staff. This place is spot-on - the perfect balance between traditional pub and modern, interesting beer selection. One of my new favourite pubs!
