The bar at the end of the street with a limited selection and slow service, but always packed. Nice to meet your friends after work, though.

Large Wetherspoons that lacks a bit of character. The reference to ’barnlike’ below is 100% accurate. Has always been busy when I have visited, which has meant some handpumps were out of action and the range on offer wasn’t as good as in many other pubs in this chain. As ever, good value for money. Ok.

This barnlike ’Spoons always seems particularly dark and dingy inside. There’s a small beer patio out the back choked with smoke. The beer selection and quality here is usually slightly poorer than in the other two Reading ’Spoons (Monks Retreat and Back of Beyond), and the service is slower. Obviously it’s still a Spoons, and therefore of a reasonable standard (and these things change over time), but if you’re in Reading and want a ’Spoons I’d try the other two in preference.

Visited on Friday 26th October during the beer festival. As well as the standard JDW house beers they had at least 4 festival beers on and those I tried were in good condition. Typical spoons on the inside and out of the former high street shop variety so natural light and windows at the front only. Was here between 10pm and 10.30pm and the place was pretty packed and service was a little on the slow side. The clientele was decent enough a good mix of ages, largely 20 and 30 somethings and no sign of any undesireables! Not sure how many interesting beers this JDW would yield outside of a festival but I’ve seen JDW’s (on here) stock less during the fest so thought it worth a mention should anyone be in Reading and want to take a quick look in case there were any new rates. 5 minutes walk from Reading BR station.
