Very pub-like place with a large bar and a few outdoor tables. Tap list is solid. Service is excellent, and the locals are friendly and outgoing. A great place for a pint - or two.

Modern interior, wall of coolers behind the bar with different temperature regulators for each depending on style. Clean interior, attention paid to details. Dozen or so drafts with over 100 bottles, this is a serious beer bar in Wellington and a mandatory visit for the beer traveler passing through town. They stock some grey market US bottles if that suits your fancy, but I was quite pleased drinking a Bach Brewing Czechmate during my viit (Saaz on steroids!).

The Malthouse was a well embraced relief from the rain and wind cutting through the streets outside. Around 15-20 taps available and 100+ bottles. Of course, you’ll find a nice selection of NZ micros with seasonals and one-offs making an appearance, but there are taps of run of the mill boring stuff too.

On Willis St. in Wellington. Beautiful bar/pub with high ceilings, more contemporary than most pubs. Loads of taps and a nice selection of bottles, including Emerson’s and Founder’s. Worth stopping in at, especially since the staff seems to know the product. Was very packed when I was there because of the Lions tour, but it probably won’t be that full again anytime soon.

Great place in the centre of Wellington. Great selection on tap. Friendly staff/good service. Atmosphere is quite good. Tried just a few beers since I had to drive. Would probably one of my favourites when I lived in Wellington.

The Malthouse (Wellington)
Joe McPhee’s review is spot on. Great renovation and fit-out of what must be a 100 year old building. Very spacious and classy – nice. This type of venue would be full of CUB import taps in Australia so makes for nice change. Must be at least 40 taps, some standard fare but plenty of interest – Emerson’s Monteiths, Epic, Renaissance, Tuatara etc (dare to dream Australia!). Food is solid albeit in a standard upmarket pub grub format. As per elsewhere in Wellington honest, enthusiastic service. 60 – 70 bottles as well. Pricing a touch on the high side at around $6 for 400ml.

Bloody busy place. Selection didn’t wow me after hearing everyone talk about it at Beervana. Prefer Hashigo zake. Nice enough though

Would have to be the best beer bar in New Zealand. The ’new’ Malthouse is a good mix of minimalist at the front and loungey at the back. And the selection - impressive in the fridge, and ridiculously good on the taps. If it coudl relocate to Auckland, it would be even better...

Great location to everything in Wellington and after Hashigo the next best place to go to

This was the first serious sit-down leg of my Wellington trip where I arranged to meet my friend Brian Eerwriter. The bar is quite a stylish little joint. I was expecting wooden panelling and British pub-like decor but got a fair modern urban trendy type place. The tap selection is extensive, the bottle selection is nothing short of impressive. I didn’t have any food, but I am led to believe it is rather good as well. Comfortable surroundings and (crucially for this prematurely old man) the ambient noise is better than tolerable. Swift, friendly and knowledgable service adds to the overall impression that this place is a must-visit and also that I’m sorry I could only go there once on this trip. A definite must return.
