a bar/restaurant that only serves WI beer? WIN! fantastic selection of beer here, great food and cool atmosphere. I just wish it wasnt in Fíing liberal Madison. the crowd spoils the mood for me. liberal shit on the tv and liberals all over the bar. i just tuned them out and chatted with my friend at the bar. I drank Moon Man on tap-very tasty!

Magnificent place! Great atmosphere. 52 taps and 130 bottles. Flights available - 4 pours for only $5. Pints and bottles are very reasonably priced. Food is excellent.

A go to destination on the square in Madison, The Old Fashioned is the definition of a "Wisconsin local". With 50 beers on draft there is no shortage of options to choose from. If you canít find it here then you probably should not be drinking craft beer.
The place does tend to get crowded in the evenings, especially on the weekends, as it is a popular place to eat as well as drink. If you come be sure to try the fish fry - a local Wisconsin tradition that you will wish was more widely available. It also does a great job of absorbing all the beers you are bound to order.
Parking, as with all places near downtown, can be tricky. However I recommend just doing a crawl from one end of State Street to here (or perhaps just down to the Great Dane) to get your moneyís worth. With a number of other bars serving excellent products you will be sure to walk away pleased with your experience.

Stopped by this place at the high suggestion of Nuplastikk. Damn, it was awesome. Two different bar areas. Kind of darker, woody and moody. I liked the atmosphere. Bartender was reasonably cool with us. Selection was great. Huge list of local beers. Flight were very reasonably priced. Food wasnít priced so bad either, for a down town restaurant. Awesome place overall. I was very happy here, and I felt it was all worth the price I paid.

09/2013. Standout beer bar during our 3-week Midwest visit. Sat at the bar, still had a very relaxed atmosphere on a late afternoon but judging by all servers but the barman an early evening onstorm was imminent...Had exceptional service from the barman who enthusiastically and expertly walked/ran us through the unknown magnitudes on the WI-only 50+ tap list, sample by sample in exchange for a fresh Westvl12 - finally losing us. Keeping up with Midwest barmen at the top of their game who are trying to prove a point about the quality of WI beers can be quite a challenge and so I lost half of my notes. Agreed that serving shakers and little sampling shot glasses are not ideal to bring out the best in all beer styles - but that seems unavoidable given the enormity of the tap range and speediness of the service. - Food wise: I think no one non-native to WI needs to have cheese curd variations twice, but they will definitely make you delve into that below 6%ABV selection by the pint. Still quite a few tap pints to be had under $4 which we learned to appreciate as very good value after shelling out quite a bit more in comparable bars during the previous 2 weeks.

A great place with some flaws. Some are just 2 sides of s coin, but I guess ill tell both.
Negatives: our beers were all served in shaker glasses..super lame, esp for a place of this caliber (we ordered a Saison and some doppelbocks. Always very crowded and busy and staff often overwhelmed. The tap list isnít exactly exciting, esp if you live in WI, most of the beers were pretty basic.
Positives: Tap list is huge and lots of bottles too with a good variety of styles and breweries (all WI). Right on the capitol square. Nice WI tavern feel to the place with food that matched. Food is fantastic including some nice WI bar snacks. Prices were shockingly fair, esp for the location and quality.

Iíve actually been here a couple times, once for brunch and once for the Friday night before GTMW. There are 50 taps, which were pretty hardcore local and regional when we were there. The place is big, with 2 halves that each have a long bar. There are some booths and tables. Good vibe, laid back, old brewery stuff on the walls. The food is good. Service is cool but they were a little overwhelmed on that Friday night. Prices are fine. Just a super cool place. Definitely recommended when in Madison.

Visited for dinner on a recent trip to Madison. Was very busy, but were called to our table in about 20 minutes. Very large selection (about 50) of Wisconsin beers on tap. And many more available in bottles In fact, most everything was from Wisconsin. That is a nice touch. Flights were available at a very reasonable price. Service was excellent. Couldnít ask for much more from any establishment. A must visit.

Large establishment split into front and back bars. Delicious but large portions of sloppity-glop burgers and cheese curd type food. Extensive and ever-changing draft lift with about a hundred bottles as well, making it the most extensive and highest quality beer selection in Madison for the traveler and local.

I found a seat at the bar on a Friday night (11 p.m.) A little crowded but happy. Friendly service. 54 Wisconsin beers on tap, and there were lots of good ones (double IPAs, stouts, other interesting beers). Samplers of 4, 8 or 12...at $1 per sample (3 oz. each)--I thought it was a great deal. The food looked o.k., with a lot of traditional Wisconsin bar foods (marinated eggs, cheddar popcorn, cheese curds). Definitely my favorite place in central Madison and a great, great place if youíre a beer tourist in Wisconsin.
