Ended up there right at their 4:00 opening on Monday, which resulted in a crowd consisting of 5 local regulars and what looked to be life-passed-by, over the hill alcoholic trying to fit in with these regulars. Though the regulars certainly enjoyed the beer, they were very much the "I like this shit cuz itís good n dark" sort of drinkers.
Contrary to their opinion, the bartender, a slutty 20-something who somehow looked over the hill herself, commented, "The schwarz? You like the schwarz? Thatís the worst beer weíve ever made! I donít like the aftertaste." Granted, this was to folks she knew very well, itís not as though she was trying to rep the brewpub like that, but still off-putting for a beer traveler. Also a bit unusual for me, when she looked at my ID, she commented, "Oh, you have the same birthday as..." and at this point Iím praying she doesnít finish with "me." But instead she says, "my sonís father." And finally, a little later, again talking to the locals, she weaves the story of her weekend: "OMG, I went to a weddinggggg, and I got sooooo drunk! I came here and spilled a glass of wine all over myself...and that was before I really got wasted!!!!!"
So maybe Iím a little too judgmental of people, but cementing my opinion of the service, I ordered the Vienna and was served an orangey, cloudy beverage that smelled strongly of cherries with some pale malts. This was not the Vienna. I politely asked if it was definitely the Vienna. "Yes." Cold stare.
Though this Cherry Baby was fine for what it was, and the pale ale was quite nice too, I have never felt so out of place in a brewpub as I did here and promptly decided to leave despite the numerous other beers on the list.

An odd place. A decent brewpub stuck in the middle of a very small, poor, rural town. I got there close to opening time and there were only regulars there. As a beer traveler, I definitely felt out of place even though this brewpub does make beer good enough to attract travelers. Maybe it was the time of day, I donít know, but the atmosphere was definitely off-putting. The service was poor and was the reason I only stayed for 1 beer (see above review for the story...). A disappointing stop and a place I certainly wouldnít consider a "beer destination" unless you live within 10 miles.

Went here between a Bells to Livery tour. Clean older building with parking on the street. Nice selection of taps and a back wall of glass for the brewing operation. Good selection of average to above average beers. Very freindly service. Nice comfortable place to have a drink or beer. I will go agian when I am in town.

Old hat has very drinkable beers, and by that I mean you can drink a lot of them. None of the beers were too heavy, too bitter, too much alcohol or anything that would prevent you from tipping back many. I liked the small town feel with a brew pub right on the main drag. The building was once associated with Bellís brewing company. I like what Old Hat has made it.

This is a neat old place. Good brews, the 3 or so times Iíve been there. Focused more on traditional German recipes, but had some good darker stuff too. Good to see the local community supports it. A brew pub in a town this size would normally be out of business in under a year.

(Visited 7-9-08) What in the world makes you think that I wouldnít stop by?!? My favorite brewpub- EVER. Fellow patrons- bikers, farmers fresh from the field, unemployed factory workers, grandmothers on fixed incomes- if you canít smell the blue collar, get a new nose. Food- decent in taste, size, and price, but I was here for the beer. Service- 1 bartender and 1 server, and the place was standing room only at 6pm on a Wednesday night, but they ran their butts off and had some time to talk. 10 taps on hand to take the stress away, and the bartender was more than happy to give me as many samples as I wanted (no mention of RB either on my part either!!!). The only brewery that makes me wish I lived in Southern Michigan, because I really miss this place! Too bad NO ONE here on the site stops by, a true hidden gem a stoneís throw away from Bellís. When the BELLS SUCKS shirts come in, let me know. Hey, even the grandma sitting beside me wanted one!!!

Hereís what every small town needs: its own brewpub right downtown. But thatís kind of a simplistic view: this was actually a side project from nearby Bellís that was bought out by the current owners. But still, the kind of thing I wish my hometown had (where the only thing on tap has "Light" in its name). Since the first rating, much of the wall space is covered with mug club mugs. Bar lady was happy to pour out as many samples as she felt like, even before I promised Iíd buy at least one whole beer, and in fact seemed anxious to know that I would be rating the place: as you can see, they need a bit more word of mouth in the beer community. But many locals were here for the beer, and a few other beer travelers like me. Lots of space, brew works visible in back, and a generally nice small town pub environment.

Typical brewpub site on the main drag in tiny Lawton, Michigan. The brewery occupies an old building with brick walls and hardwood ceilings/floors. The paneling above the bar is covered with a variety of different hats (get it?), and the ceiling is adorned with crumpled $1 bills. There were 7 beers on tap when I visited, mostly lagers, and there was one wine offering. Typical brewpub food; my burger was very good after a day of field work. A handful of regulars occupied the place when I was there but the pub was otherwise quiet. A good beer stop in small-town America.
