Great bar in downtown Asheville. The decor is neat, but kinda dingy. This is made up for by the comfortable feel, and the busy, but laid back, vibe. The servers were overworked, but were very friendly, when they had the time. The selection is great. Plenty of taps upstairs and down, including several rare and unusual things. The food is surprisingly good. The prices are great, too. All the beer on tap is similarly priced, and they offer half pours. This is a top notch beer bar, and I will return, if I can.

Wide open toward the street. good luck finding parking but they had a really good selection of draft beers. Standing room only on Friday.

Great multi level place. We did the American beers on the ground floor and the Belgians in the basement, which is where we hung out (on the big leather couch to boot). Impressed with the quality of the house beers, and a fairly extensive guest list as well. We liked this place enough to visit the Biltmore location on the way out of town.

Visited a couple times. First time was on a Monday and Second time was on a Tuesday. Both days were shortly after they opened, and I had similar experiences each time. The beers available were excellent. Great diversity of styles and many breweries were showcased. We were here for what they were calling Sour Fest. This is where they have 4 new sour beers on tap each day of the week. I think the goal was to have a lot of sour beers on tap by the end of the week if the kegs held up. The days I went, they tap list changed a bit, but mostly they just added the sour stuff. Great bartenders that were very knowledgeable. There is two floors to this place. Downstairs had a cooler vibe to me and came across more as the European style locale with lower light, bottles on shelves and cushy seating. This place was great and I would come here all the time if I lived close by.

Solid beer bar with two bars - American and Belgian - on two different levels and then a cocktail bar on the third flood. Solid selection overall and solid prices. When not busy, the servers downstairs will get you a beer from upstairs. No super rare Belgians, but nice selection.

This place is really quite cool. It’s sort of divided into three main parts. The downstairs is sort of the "Belgian beer bar" and they have, you guessed it, mostly Belgian beers available. At the street level is the more typical American beer bar and you can try the Thirsty Monk beers here. Upstairs they have a cocktail bar which serves excellent drinks and has sort of a cool, speakeasy feel to it. It was actually my favorite part of the place.

Anyway, my primary focus here was to try the house beers. Everything on draft is available in a flight, which is always appreciated (pretty good pricing, too). They only had three house beers on, so had to pick another offering to fill it out. Good service as well. The ambiance here is a bit generic, sadly, as the other two portions of the business are quite cool and enjoyable, I thought.

It’s a good place as you can almost certainly find something to enjoy here, regardless of your taste. Definitely worth a stop, particularly given the proximity to other things to do/places to go.

I spent my time in this place in the Belgium bar down stairs. Didn’t have the food or frankly spend much time upstairs. Bar had five or six tap handles, a couple were Belgium imports. It had lots of Belgium style bottles. Ambiance was rustic, very low lighting. Years ago I would have given this place a much higher rating, but now it just doesn’t stick out like it might have 5 to 6 years ago. I’d still recommend a visit, but there are lots of breweries in Asheville and I probably recommend going to them first.

Final destination one night during our long weekend in Asheville. We opted to go downstairs to the Belgian bar. The bar had a darker ’Belgian’ atmosphere with a long bar and some tables. Obviously the focus was on Belgian beers; some imports, US made and even Monks Cafe made. Sharing two flight the beer was great and so was the service. Downstairs seemed more laid back and quieter than upstairs. Overall a great experience and would love to come back.

The Thirsty Monk is a well-loved downtown craft beer bar and was the first stop on my recent Asheville Beercation. You cannot miss it: located on the busy corner of Patton Avenue and Coxe Avenue (the latter will take you a few short blocks to the South Slope District and several breweries), the Monk does business in a quaint lavender brick building complete with a large painting of himself on the outside. Upon entry is the first floor bar area, a single room furnished with several hightops and tables comfortably surrounded by the inevitable array of beer paraphernalia. At the far end of the moderate-sized bar is the open kitchen, where eclectic and cheap grub can be had and enjoyed. There is also a water station from which thirsty patrons may hydrate themselves. (I noticed plenty of these throughout San Diego – a good idea, too!) Downstairs is the more intimate Belgian bar – and the restrooms. And if you seek whiskey or a cocktail, there is another floor upstairs (through the elevator door) called “Top of the Monk.” As of late, they now brew their own beer a few miles south near the Biltmore Estate and offer about 36 taps (20 upstairs, 16 downstairs) and a worthy choice of bottled brews. During my visit (upstairs and downstairs) I enjoyed: Thirsty Monk Autumnal Ale, Sierra Nevada Celebration, Highland Thunderstruck, Stillwater Brontide, Ommengang Valor and a rarity to the East Coast, something wonderful from Colorado’s Crooked Stave. The Monk has a pretty reasonable pricing system for a full pour or a half pour dependent on the beer (of course!) – I mean, c’mon, $6.00 for a pint of Founder’s Breakfast Stout! In any case, the Thirsty Monk is a MUST when in Asheville.
