What a place - totally spoiled me for selection of sour beers when I was there. Order the pint of bacon!

Cool atmosphere, very chill. Nice chatty service. I’d like to hang out here but there just wasn’t enough locals to make it interesting, really a weak list. Disappointing.

The Thirsty Monk has an impressive range of beers with at least 20 on tap and about 200 bottles. Upstairs it’s spacious and airy, whilst the downstairs room is like a dungeon - long, dark and narrow with lanterns, a large Belgian flag and lots of little models of monks. It’s very much like a Belgian brown café in fact. There’s also a small patio at the front. (Last visited 9 February 2014).

Central Asheville dedicated beer bar. Belgian imports and Belgian styles downstairs. Anglo-American stuff upstairs. Saw a lot of barrelled and strong beer on the menu. Struggled to find something to drink. Picked a NZ pale ale from an English brewer which was oxidized :/

I had a great time here. They have an extensive draft list featuring beers from the local area in addition to esoteric stuff from around the USA. They offer a four-beer flight, which was handy. Great value. Friendly and attentive service. Very convenient location. Well worth seeking out if you are in town.

Visited late on a Thursday to find the place pretty empty except for a few other ratebeerians. I visited the downstairs bar. It’s a pretty casual spot, decorated with beer signs and other paraphernalia. Solid tap list. Decent locals, some random offerings from the likes of Sierra Nevada and Ballast Point. Prices were decent, service was fine. Overall, definitely a place to include in a tour of Asheville.

Upstairs is American beer with lots of wood and bright. Downstairs is Belgian with lots of stone and dark. Both fun and great. Service was more help yourself and food was passable, but beer list and atmosphere were top notch.

The Thirsty Monk is definitely the best beer bar in Asheville...and that’s saying a lot given Asheville’s rising craft beer star. The selection is amazing...not to mention a fun upstairs bar and a really cool downstairs Belgium bar too. I found the staff to be very accomodating and willing to talk beer. Add to that some really good sort of eclectic upscale bar food...and you have a very winning combination. This is the place to go in Asheville to sample a wide variety of WNC beers as well as special beers from beyond NC.

11/29/13. Stopped in briefly while visiting Asheville on 11/27. I would say this would probably be the place I would be hanging out at if I lived in town (in addition to Wicked Weed).

Bright upstairs bar, typical beer bar - signs everywhere, tap handles on the ceiling, etc. Downstairs is darker and nice, more chic, really cool.

Our bartenders were prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Great selection of local beers and others - a pleasant surprise.

I did not try any food (if they have any).

Expensive pours, honestly. Some were half pours reaching some surprisingly high prices.

Overall, I would say this is a must stop in town. I will definitely be back. Make sure to check the upstairs and downstairs taplists. One oddity is you have to tab out before switching floors. Not a huge deal, but just know that going in.
