Suprisingly ok range of handpumps at a trainstation pub! Ok service. Nice outdoor seating as well.

Visited on Friday 26th October at 8pm and the place was the busiest I’d seen it. We grabbed one of the last 2 tables remaining and to be fair the service was pretty prompt. Decent enough beer range and not too scummy for a station pub. Guest cask ales on this visit were from Andwell, Arkells and Cottage combining in total to 8. Shame they couldn’t have had a few more breweries and styles on across the 8 pumps - all 4% golden/blonde type beers.

Not the most inviting of pubs in terms of appearance or atmosphere but then how many pubs right next to a station are? OK I can think of a couple. To be honest, given the location, all you need is a few decent beers to keep you occupied while waiting for a train, or to set you up immediately you get off one. With eight handpumps, the Three Guineas achieves that. I’ve been in numerous times over the years and never stayed longer than half an hour or so, but I can’t remember ever failing to find a beer that was new to me. Usually two or three winners. Job done. Service has always been fine but I’ve never been there at a busy time of day.

Visited this pub several times. Being just outside the train station this pub more or less is a most to visit. With its 8 taps, it is very likely to find something new to drink as well. It is very much a sportsbar, so if you hate football this will not be a place for you. They do nice pub food, the staff is friendly, and you can follow the timetables for the trains from the pub :-)

First stop after arriving to Reading by train in the morning. Quite a cosy pub with good service (even though asked to wait a bit for them to get everything set for the day). Good selection of handpumps, all beers tasted in good condition.

Pub by the Reading railway station. A bit sterile, yet friendly. Few TV screens fo sports, friendly staff. 8 Casks, few more taps for the boring lager.

Middling beer quality. Good range but they should limit it if they can’t keep the quality up. Rude staff.

Pub just by Reading train station. Loads of different beers on to try and obviously a solid location. Rather run-down also, no surprise there really. Its just the most simple place to go from the train station.

Being a station pub, this has a high turnover of clientele, and when combined with the large sports screens, passing trains and buses, and station announcments the place can be rather noisy and frenetic. However, there are several things that make this stand out from your average station pub. First of all, catch it at a quiet time (ie not rush hour, and when there’s no sport on) and you’ll find a very relaxing, tradtional pub inside. There is a large area of outdoor seating too, although this does always tend to be noisy from the buses. Secondly, the staff always seem very friendly and pretty knowledgeable about their ales - although at busy times you may have to wait a considerable time to get served. But the most astonishing thing is the array of ales, the like of which I’ve never seen in another station pub. seven on when I was there - 4 from Hampshire brewery, the rest from much further afield (one from as far north as Inveralmond!). Probably not somewhere you’re going to stay all night, but for real ale enthusiasts coming to Reading by train this pub should not be missed.

Large pub next to the entrance to the railway station. 6 interesting beers were on offer cask-conditioned and were served in good condition. Toilets could do with a refurb, but overall a pretty good pub.
