July 29, 2011. I visited this place earlier this afternoon, having known it was open at noon, I would have had lunch there. The food menu is small but nice, next time I’ll eat there (three years later I came back for lunch this time and the menu is a bit bigger, my grilled cheese sandwich was great). The beers, alot of good stuff on tap, I hade two of the three Hill Farmstead on tap and they were realy good. No bottle at this time because they had a problem with their basement, but that’s OK, there is to many goos stuff on tap. And the two bartenders where great and knowledgeable. Montpelier is a nice town to viste, this place make’s it even better!

A small venue in Downtown Montpelier, the smallest capital city in the United States. A place where one can get Lawson’s Finest Liquids, Hill Farmstead, Lost Nation, Zero Gravity, and other locally brewed beers on tap in a pint glass or a half pint. Not a ton of seating so get there early because a lot of people like to visit this place. I did not try the food but it looked good and many people seemed to be enjoying it. Kids are welcome.

Downtown Montpelier makes parking an adventure. Once inside, the bar area is nice and long with lots of patrons to boot. Dining area is considerably more plain. Lots of natural wood, floor, table, chairs. Service is very good and the tap list is full of local favorites. Food was outstanding and the prices are extremely reasonable. One of the best places in Montpelier.

Stopped at the Three Penny for lunch on a Friday. Really relaxing atmosphere. Great taplist including Hill Farmstead, Heady and Lawson’s. Half pours available. Fast and friendly service. Flatbreads and the trout sandwich were really tasty. My favorite place in our Vermont trip!

An outstanding bar and restaurant. The beer range is fantastic, with a strong emphasis on local breweries; Hill Farmstead, Lawson’s Finest Liquids, The Alchemist, Lost Nation, et al are commonly found on tap. There is also a small but well-chosen bottle list. The food options are quite good as well, all tasty and nicely prepared. Good service. The value here is decent. Given the quality of beer, food and service, it is absolutely going out of your way to visit.

Stopped in on the way back from the HF excursion. Nice little space with a fairly large bar separated from a smallish dining area by a wall. Pretty standard bar ambiance. Large removable chalk boards list the available taps. Another board at the back of the bar lists available bottles, which are not many in number, but carefully selected for impact. A more geographically distributed taplist than many places here, but they still had the obligatory vermont beers, including HF Everett and Edward. Staff was friendly and helpful. Did not try the food.

Visited 2/12/14 with Linh, Minh and Angela. Normal bar area with additional booth seating in a side room. Solid bottle list and an even better draft list. Expect hill farm, heady topper, zero gravity and other fresh pale ales. This would be the dream hometown bar. Good service.

Stopped in for a couple beers shortly after they opened on a Saturday. Excellent taplist, decent bottle list. They were tapping a double dry hopped cask of Lawson’s Double Sunshine. Could have spent hours and lots of money here.

When I visited: Late May 2013.
What I had: Sixpoint Apollo Wheat, Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale, Dieu du Ciel! Pénombre IPA Noire, and Grassroots / Three Penny Song of Spring on tap, sample of Founders Doom Imperial IPA, Gueuze-Braised Rabbit and Spaetzle, Spring Chicken Stew and Pastry and white wine for the wife, Old Rasputin Brownies to split.
What I liked: Exceptional food, beautiful dining room, first-rate table service from our waiter, solid and clearly visible draught list, good music, lively atmosphere on the bar side.
What I disliked: We had a group of seniors staring at us the entire time that we ate, which made things a little uncomfortable. Unlike our waiter the bartender was surly and seemed bothered when I asked for samples. He also took forever to bring the check. The tap lineup, while very good, didn’t blow me away.
Would I go back? Yes. Despite its shortcomings this is still a great beer bar and resto.
