Actually have to say that this place has improved markedly over time. They actually manage to get some harder to find brews these days - and the selection really is quite large. Pricing is pretty average. Staff, although mostly not knowing a thing about any of the product, has at least one hard core beer guy on the payroll these days. Service for me has always at least been friendly. Although I wouldn’t go out of my way for a visit, I think most people would easily find something worthwhile there. I should add that they have recently been showing a real commitment to stocking locally brewed stuff, which is commendable and welcome.

(Visited 03/2014): This Total Wine location is on Broad Street in the Henrico area of north Richmond. There is a large parking lot in front of the building.

The interior is similar to other stores, with aisles full of different beverages. The beer is located on the left hand side, both in packs and singles. The sections are divided geographically.

The beer selection numbers in the hundreds, including many regional breweries like Starr Hill, Blue Mountain, Hardywood and Alewerks. Other domestic craft breweries like Bruery, Boulevard, Epic, Terrapin and Firestone Walker, plus many imports.

Service was pretty good on my visit, if typical of this type of store. I was pointed to the section I needed, asked if I needed any help, and treated well at checkout.

Overall this chain doesn’t have a world class selection but can always be counted on to provide some good selections, including many from local brewers.

Huge selection of craft beer here. Very reasonable prices, but you’ll only find the occasional rare beer here. Staff hare somewhat knowledgable but this is primarily a wine store. Kegs are available here for several craft beers too.

This was the first Total Wine i’ve been too, and I LOVED it. It’s great to go into those specialty shops and find that truly ’rare’ beer, but i get equal excitement from finding beers i haven’t yet tried from some of my favorite ’macro’ microbreweries like Troegs, Tommyknocker, Victory, etc. I left with over a dozen beers that I have been trying to track down over the past year. They also seem to get seasonal releases earlier than other stores in richmond. Service seemed to be a little lacking, but after a few requests, they did break down several six-packs for me.

Good selection of bottled beer and wine and surprisingly some bottled/canned food items that can be difficult to find... Staff is never any help though and prices can be expensive.

Good for your basic beer shopping. Better selection and slightly better pricing than other grocery-type stores. Generally larger selection and better pricing than the smaller wine stores. Can find stuff for both me and the husband here. Staff not super-knowlegeable.

An awesome beer selection for the area with a massive wine selection. Great place to get anything from a single to a keg. Overall a bit pricey but worth the visit.

This is my go-to store when even I go down to Richmond, a nice selection of singles, prices are unpredictable, but they have some really good prices every now and again. Selection is pretty solid, I’ve had really helpful beer guys and completely worthless ones here, just depends who is working, as the staff is mostly wine people. Also, I think the singles selection is down a bit from where it was about 5 years ago, but it is still pretty good.

I find it a little better than the S. Richmond Total Wine, but its not that special. Pretty pricey, but a decent selection.

A large, tired-looking warehouse with an emphasis on wine - wide selection of bottles, usually displayed standing up in a surprisingly warm, cavernous room. The selection of craft and imported beers is excellent, and prices are much better than in my home neighborhood near Boston. Service is friendly but uninformed. Beer can be hard to locate - Stone ’s full line-up is in alphabetical order, except for the Imp Russian Stout released yesterday for 2012, which was on an odds-and-ends display area., and the Epic 11-11-11 release was still available in April, 2012, but in another area again. It seems hard to believe that they have much turnover of the craft bottles, given their emphasis on wine and commercial beers.
