With a hame like trappist house, I had high hopes. This is a decent belgian bar with nice beers available but nothing too extensive. Come here with friends but there are better bars with binders full of beers.

Visited here on a Wednesday night, so it was pretty quiet. Bargirl was cute, although working alone so pretty rushed off her feet. Interior is dark and atmospheric and there’s a decent amount of tables to sit outside and enjoy a beer. Tap list isn’t that exciting but they have a good bottled beer list. Tried the local Gruut beers and some regulars. Lambic list could be better. Decent bar though and would come back here again

Visited 2006-15, post-Studioskoop. Easy stop around the corner after going to the cinema at St. Anna/Zuid, with lots of potential, worn, fireplace & oak atmosphere. Safe but enjoyable housebeer brewed by the owner at a well-known brewery, 3-4 taps including a very nice and creamy Chimay Tripel last time we were there. Otherwise good selection incorporating one-off beers by a few newer Belgian breweries, but unnecessarily expensive for some beers like geuzes and the only place in Ghent where I have seen aged Orval well surpass the €5 mark. Owner up for a chat, slow and a bit lacklustre service which seems to focus its attention on regulars, locals and the 3 barflies.

Johan Uytterhaege’s beer pub, located off the Ghent city centre in an area not too far away from the red lights district. Brown café, cosy and ’woody’, with lots of old beer paraphernalia; typical Belgian beer pub I’d argue, no foreign beers but a well-balanced selection of Belgian ones including Chimay Dorée and a couple of other rarities, though the major part of the list consists of well-known classics. Can be quite crowded in weekends and service is notoriously slow, though friendly. Not sure if this is still opened, though; I’ll go and check it out again one of these weekends.

Good selection with plenty information, nice ambience, clean and friendly. My wife lost her purse her and when she returned two days later, the staff recognised her and produced it, cards and money intact, Bless them! Free snacks on table, excellent beer, mixed clientele, wood & brick interior, nice experience.

Good beer list, knowledgeable owner. Crappy service, probably because the place is understaffed: usually one (!) guy serving the whole place which is about 120 persons at maximum capacity, while the owner stays behind the bar. Good ambiance, although it used to be always very smoky. But I haven’t been there since the no-smoking law is in order. Hope it’s better now! Prices are rather high (4.5€ for a Rodenbach Grand Cru, real geuzes start at around 7 and go up till 11 for 37.5cl). Snacks are way overpriced. A good place for a drink or two, but not for the whole night, unless money is no problem to you.
MESSAGE FOR FOREIGNERS VISITING GENT: if you read this, you’re probably planning a visit to Belgium, and Gent in particular. I’m always interested to get to know other ratebeerians, and if you come from an interesting country, we can maybe to an in person beer trade? Contact me!

Bar in the heart of Gent’s (modest) red light district. Curious blend of old and new decor lends a disjointed atmosphere. Good beer menu with a healthy selection. Service was prompt and friendly, even exchanging a bottle that we’d drunkenly ordered by mistake.
