I’ve been meaning to get to this place for awhile, but it’s out in the middle of nowhere (please forgive me if youre local). Some reviews seemed a bit shill-y and had me skeptical, especially after finally locating it in a strip mall between a dry cleaners and tanning salon. Deep breath, go inside, hey...its alright!
Past a small vestibule waiting area, you are in the larger bar room, with a dining area off to the side. On a Sunday afternoon, this room was full of families with kids, but thankfully the bar itself was kid-free. Nice to see them cater to both families and the bar crowd. It was fairly loud, with high open ceilings and stereo at Friday night volume. The bar itself was nice, a few dozen taps on the wall, set into a copper basin, with wood detailing around that. Up above there were assorted beer cases stacked up, 3 flatscreens, and a shelf with branded growlers strangely enough. Lots of beer signs tacked up all over the walls, and some nice colorful chalkboards done by hand.
Beer selection was good, though it leaned heavily toward IPAs and US craft (only imports were Delirium & Guinness). I wanted a stout to go with a few oysters (it was during oysterfest), but sadly Guinness was the only option. FFF was on special, $3 Gumballhead was music to my ears. Beer list was broken down by general styles, with abv, short description, BA/RB rating, and price. There werent really any bottles worth mentioning, just a handful of macros. I get that the draft beer is the main focus, but it wouldnt hurt to have a few bottles of stuff not on draft, namely imports.
Food was the highlight, oysters and a generous portion of lamb loli-chops, 4 of them with a garlic oil and roasted squash. Guacamole was alright, and the panini was really just a grilled cheese, but also ok. A broad and varied menu covering pub food, cajun, mexican, asian, and a few other random things. Bison burgers looked excellent, ill have to get one next time.
Overall a good place for fresh drafts and great food, an oasis in the craft beer desert of the southwest suburbs. Worth a stop if youre local or passing through, but ultimately not a major destination. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 donttreadonme (23) Chicago, Illinois | September 27, 2010 Hit this place for the beer battle between DFH and Rogue...Rogue was jobbed! This place however was fantastic...had an excellent burger, about 3 feet high, service was attentive given the huge crowd and the girls knew their beer...only tried the beers presented but they had 3F, 2 Bros, Founders, Bells a flowin’ - if you are in Mokena (sorry) - this place is fantastic stop by for a few and some grub | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 16/20 satan165 (101) River Grove, Illinois | July 17, 2010 easy to see how they cut the BS from the old galway location and refocused into a smaller, smarter room. well decorated with a multitude of beer tins covering the walls and a huge line of taps. attended during a special event so while most of the staff gave great service it was hard to test their knowledge. i did not eat there but i saw at least 3 people order the nachos and it was at minimum 3 lbs. of a platter towering nearly 12" high off the plate. going back for another event in a couple months and if the place was closer (or at least near an interstate) id return. niall seems to have a genuine interest in making this place great and the ’ultimate beer bouts’ are a very unique idea which so far are well executed as well. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 16/20 monkeychugg55 (30) Joliet, Illinois | June 6, 2010 Nice bar area with a large assortment of taps. Pretty good selection of midwestern ales. Lots of Three Floyds, Bells, Dark Horse, etc. Prices are fair. Nice little place, will have to stop by again. | 90 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 18/20 WITTBEER (23) Illinois | May 20, 2010 Best beer bar south of Chicago. 40+ taps and good food. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 17/20 Cornfield (143) Oak Forest, Illinois | April 26, 2010 There’s very little to dislike about this place except that it’s a bit out of the way for most. It has a nice, friendly bar kind of feeling. Per usual, I can’t &/or shouldn’t eat most of the food being offered, but my friends seemed to enjoy it. But, as I (too?) often say, it’s all about the beer for me. They’ve got a great selection of rotating taps and plenty of bottles to choose from. It’s rare nowadays for me to be able to walk into a bar and have three beers that I hadn’t tried yet, but Tribes was up to the task. They also use proper glassware, for all you snobs out there. I’ll be returning when I have the money. | 80 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 msante79 (335) Mount Prospect, Illinois | April 17, 2010 Stopped in with my dad and brother after long day of yard work. Was not the biggest fan of the old Galaway Tribes so did not know what to expect. I must say this place much much better than Galaway. First it is much more of a true craft beer bar than an overly Irish restaurant/bar. 40 tap loaded with high quality brews. Good selection of bottles and bombers as well. Of 37 taps they had list they had 8 or so that I have not had which is pretty rare these days for a local spot. Tons of quality brews on tap including a bunch from Stone, 3F, Brewdog, New Holland, and Green Flash. Food was really good. Me and my dad had the Roast Beef and Gorgonzola Sandwich which was really good. My brother had a Bison Burger which he thought was quite good. This is probably the best beer bar on the whole southside. Will definitely be back when in the area. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 lovemyipas (17) sw burbs, Illinois | April 2, 2010 great place to hang for a while. great food especially the bison burger and the hot sausage sandwich. 40 tap handles and a descent selection of bombers and 12 oz bottles. mainly a tap house though with some pretty knowledgeable staff. brewerys’ and beers ranging from: 3f’s, founders, great Lakes, new holland, stone, st bernardus, surly, racer5, dark horse, dogfish, and a few others. a must stop in the southwest suburbs. |
