72 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 3/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 Drake (392) Ivy, Virginia | October 5, 2008 Came here between World Beer Festival sessions as well as after the festival.
If you like the industrial vibe, this place is for you.
We ran into lots of servers, who ranged from friendly and attentive to downright incompetent.
Lots of seating indoors and out.
Food was tasty and simple.
Impressive selection of beer, truly living up to the taphouse moniker. Highly recommended. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE 6/10 OVERALL 15/20 phaleslu (314) Cincinnati, Ohio | December 13, 2010 Met up with local legend JCB here on a Friday afternoon for lunch and some pints. The surrounding area is pretty cool, with the old American Tobacco buildings rehabbed with restaurants and shops (in St. Louis the building would have been abandoned for 40 years and then demolished, so I appreciate this). The inside is fine, with a big, well-lit main room and nice back bar, and a lot of wood. The service behind the bar was friendly but slow at times. I was thrilled to see so many local and regional labels: Fullsteam, Foothills, Skull Coast, The Duck-Rabbit, Terrapin, et al- that’s exactly the kind of stuff I came here for, but there is a lot more on the taps, too. My sandwich was okay, but the garlic fries that came with it were tasty. Prices are fair. Tyler’s made for a nice afternoon of NC drinking, and I would call this a must-visit if you’re in Durham for a day or more. | 88 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 GeneralGao (222) Iowa City, Iowa | August 8, 2005| Updated May 22, 2007 Great place. Located in downtown Durham next to the Durham Bulls stadium. >50 beers on tap. All of them imports or microbrews. Many North Carolina local brews. Food is okay. Service good. Did I mention all the tap beers? Pint night is Wednesday; you buy the beer and get the brewery’s pint glass. Lots of outdoor seating with good people watching. | 86 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 beernovice39 (196) Montana | October 1, 2012| Updated May 22, 2007 Had an early lunch here. Good food and great service. Great tap selection. | 76 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 6/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 14/20 JCB (174) Durham, North Carolina | March 4, 2007| Updated May 22, 2007 My second favorite local. Superb selection of beverages - locals, seasonals, Belgians, etc. Really nothing to complain about in that department. But the ambiance is a little bit sketchy (big booming ceilings and weird light), the service a bit uneven (nasty hostess!), and the food merely passable. Still, order up some tricolor chips and the latest Brooklyn or Duck Rabbit seasonal, and enjoy! | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Tim Webb (173) Cambridge, England | October 16, 2012| Updated May 22, 2007 Impressively large bar-restaurant-terrace place near the Durham Bulls baseball ground that hosts the annual World Beer Festival. Short supply lines and tight stock control increases the chance of obliterating dodgy beers. Nicely laid out. Intrusive music, as ever. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 nearbeer (165) Knoxville, Tennessee | November 9, 2010 Impressive, and up-to-date beer list. Nice restored warehouse atmosphere in historic downtown area. Food and service was above average and prices were very reasonable. | 70 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 11/15 FOOD 5/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 TURDFERGUSON (147) Carrboro, North Carolina | August 15, 2011 haha, the picture here is of the carrboro location. someone should fix that. anyway. this location is much larger than the carrboro tylers and has more taps. not to say they are that much better than carrboro qualitatively, but they do tend to do their special release events out here instead of carrboro, i guess because it’s a bigger space. I wish it was much better but it’s what we got. | 78 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD 7/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 15/20 OldGrowth (138) North Carolina | June 3, 2006| Updated June 10, 2006 Visited Durham location 5/31/06. Wife and I stopped by for lunch. Nice place, Industrial warehouse redone into retail space I assume. Brick & wood interior, High ceilings. about a 12 seat bar with tables & booths inside and tables outside as well. They have a second room in back that has pool table and a couple video games that stays open later than the rest of the place. Was slow when we were there, but it was lunch time and I don’t think there was a game that day, Durham Bulls, so. I had a Carlolina Maibock, New South IPA (nitro) and a North Coast Red Seal pale ale. Nice mix of Carolina beer and national distributed beer (North Coast, Avery, Sierra Nevada, some belgians too, but I didn’t write down the tap list) Good service from bartender and he answered question wife & I about the area. Typical pub grub, burgers, chicken, sandwiches, cheese covered things. Addresed kind of fooled us as on Durham street you won’t see it, but that’s because of the shop in the courtyard area all have #’s but not necceasarily a door to Blackwell. Overall very nice place and would go back many times if I lived in the area | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE N/A OVERALL 16/20 Immy (109) Virginia Beach, | October 10, 2006| Updated June 10, 2006 Met up with JCB prior to the Durham WBF for a few pints and a trade. Jason recommended it, and it was awesome! Excellent selection of taps and bottles. Good food, esp. their potato chips, which are made on site. Waiter had a very solid knowlege and passion for beer. Some may not care for the style of the Tobacco Historic District, but it suits me just fine. |
