Old school place close to the Castle; small and "cozy"; which can mean smoky and crapped in Czech. I had a relaxing visit around 2 PM. Only one beer; not unusual for old school Czech pubs. Pilsner Tankova cantí be beat1

Nice and small, traditional Prague boozer, what you see is what you get. Fast service, the barman is busy, beers are flowing from the tap almost constantly.

My favourite Pilsner Urquell tankova pub when I am in Prague! Sit down by the window on a wooden stool, say little or nothing and feel like one of the regulars. Another glass of beer will quickly show up when your first is empty. (Visited 22nd February 2012)

The prototypical bar for the working class drinking scene in Prague. Definitely a small local place where the guys come after work to slam down half liter by half liter of Urquell. The cask is in excellent fresh condition, and the character of the place is worth checking out, if only to see how a lot of Czechs do their drinking. Food was serviceable as well; came down from the castle in the early afternoon and was starving, and their limited pub menu did the trick. Worth a stop. Note: Iím taking points off on service because they jacked up a couple of the prices on the bill because they knew we were tourists. I paid it anyways to support the place because everything in Prague is cheap, but still a sleazy move. Score will be low for that and because there really is no selection, but go anyway.

If you have come to Prague, then you owe yourself a trip to try the best Pilsner Urquel. U Hrocha has two alcohol beverage choices, one of the best glasses of Pilsner Urquel in the city and shots.
Very local scene here, but they are used to those in the know popping in her for the good stuff. I had a blast here watching the Czech Ice Hockey playoffs. I loved that as soon as the game ended, the TV went off, and everyone back to the job at hand - drinking down that wonderul Pilsner.
My session at the Hippo was a highlight of my beer drinking week in Prague along with the Zly.
Just one warning, the place seriously fills up with ciggy smoke in the evening, so if this is a problem, get here as soon as possible after opening.
Worth every second.

Small place, very rustic, but a little too small and crowded. Tankovna Urquell in excellent condition. If youíre in the area, a visit here wonít harm you

Small place just below the castle very close to the British Embassy and the statue of Winston Churchill. Friendly place full of locals. I prefer U Kocura just around the corner which is bigger

Only Urquell available I think. But is a very local czech bar with real czech people despites being in the center of the touristic Prague. They seem to donít bother about non locals coming to the bar and the service is fair but do not expect fluid english speaking. Very nice, I like it a lot.

This place is mentioned in every Prague beer guide in the world. Itís Prague 1. A little tucked away from the main crowd. 28 Kronor for 0,5 Urquell, served way too cold by the way. Has a lot of Atmosphere. A lot of drunk people on Easter Sunday. Very small. Quite funny experience, but dont go for ticks cause only 1 beer is avaliable.

Great pub tucked away in a great location - just try and score a seat. Full of locals but seemingly tolerant of tourists - I guess itís not really a place you stumble across by accident. Just enough attitude to make you feel like youíve had an authentic experience but not so much that you feel the need to leave. Cheap for the location. My first visit a few years back and the beer was awesome, most recent visit it was unfortunately well below par. It has a good reputation though, so Iím going to assume that was an aberration.
