98 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 10/10 OVERALL 20/20 JohnCoctosin (7) California | June 5, 2011 The best bar within at least 20 miles.
51 great brews on tap and about the same number of bottles. Always a good selection of SoCal craft beer as well as personal favorites like Maui Brewing, DFH and Avery. Bartenders are the best; friendly, personable and knowledgeable. Burgers, salads, beer cheese soup and pork cracklins are outrageous. There is a different beer used in every dish. They use interesting meats too like rabbit burgers and rabbit sausage.
Overall a perfect beer and wine only bar experience. | 96 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 20/20 rhartogs (11) Arlington, Virginia | March 8, 2012 Amazing food and beer selection. Follow them on Facebook for constant updates. I had an amazing burger there. Burger of the gods. Even my picky family finds great things. Wish I lived closer. 3,000 miles doesn’t cut it for me. | 94 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 HopMasterFlex (10) Carlsbad, California | April 19, 2011 Urge is the top spot in North County. The only problem with Urge is that it isn’t coastal. 51 taps and they try for rare or small batch stuff as often as possible. The events are killer and the food is even better. The burgers are truly gourmet at chili’s prices. Bob is the best bar keep in the biz and will talk beer and wine with you as long as it isn’t crazy busy. | 94 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 JoeTheYounger (44) Claremont, California | June 21, 2011 Stopped by this place for the first time after the Alesmith BA Speedway release. The tap list was great, service was great, food was great. Can’t complain in any way. The beer cheese fries with the medium rare steak on top were amazing. This place is a must if you love craft beer and/or food. | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD 10/10 VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 19/20 NachlamSie (447) Tennessee | July 6, 2012 Urge has a typical gastropub ambiance. It’s spacious and clean with some cool art on the walls and cool music on the speakers. The beer list is extensive with full pours and smaller pours available for everything on tap. There are a lot of interesting and rare drafts and bottles with emphasis on west coast brews, specifically local stuff. The food. . . I’m not sure I can find the words to describe how delicious the food is. We ate the garbage burger which is a beef/smoked wild boar patty with beer cheese and sauted mushrooms and onions, a beet and goat cheese salad, mind-blowing ale-cheddar soup, with a side of some kind of broccoli hybrid. "Delicious" does not do justice to what my tastebuds experienced. Come here to have a great beer and make sure to come hungry. | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD 8/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 iacopino_IpA (71) , | March 18, 2013 Visited on October 12.Huge Selection Of Both draft And bottles. Bar:
What can I say? I wish I had an Urge to visit on the east coast. 51 beers on tap, they go through over 40 kegs a week. I visited Urge 5 times in the 8 days I was in Rancho Bernardo. Each time there was at least 2 new killer beers on tap that I needed to try. I was lucky enough to try fresh pours of 2010 Abyss, Oaked Yeti, Speedway, Mikkeller To Via From, Young’s Double Choc on nitro, Matilda, Yakima Twilight, Victory at Sea and many more. Unlike some other SD bars which have mostly Cali beers, Urge has a good mix of beers from each region. Meet the owner and he was very cool and a huge stout lover. The bar area has about 6 high tables, a nice long bar with several TV’s. I was happy to catch some of the nfl games while meeting Naven there for lunch. They also have a very extensive bottle selection nicely listed in a menu with abv, style, location and price. Only thing I had that was not on tap was the Maui Coconut Porter in can. They also offer tasters of each beer on tap. Most tasters are only $2 and they give you a nice pour, at least 3oz. One day I stopped in and tried 6 tasters of 6 different brews on tap and the bill was only $14 with tax. I was able to try a few beers that I have in bottle at home but haven’t wanted to crack open. So for $2 I was able to try the beer and keep it in my cellar.
Food:
Food is a bit pricey and I only ate there once but everything I tired was excellent. This is a beer destination although there was a 45 min wait for a table at 6pm on a Thurs night, so someone is going there for the food. During my last visit Jack White and his gang where in the dinning area enjoying some food and drink. Only complaint I have is that while dinning at the bar I didn’t get any silverware until 5 minutes after my food arrived. While this was annoying, i was drinking Black Market from cask at the time so I was entertained with the beer. This was by far my favorite place to drink while in San Diego this trip. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 dresden (40) Saskatchewan | April 29, 2013 Excellent restaurant in a stripmall just off the I15. Very impressive list of beer here, but also has fantastic food. Waiters have an electronic ordering system and your food and beer arrive VERY VERY FAST. Great restaurant. | 86 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD 9/10 VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 18/20 Naven (63) Poway, California | October 23, 2010 Awesome place. When you walk in, you are immediately greeted by rows and rows of glorious, beautiful craft beer taps. They have a tap list on their chalkboard, but it only listed about half of the actual beers they had. So, you have to find one of their beer menu’s, which is laid out much like a wine list. That’s about where my complaints end. Prices were pretty good, and I actually liked that some of the higher abv beers were served in half pints. I kind of like trying different things. They have 50 taps and nearly 100 bottles. I counted 10 things on the tap list that I had never had. The menu items are all based around beer. I ordered the "burger of the gods" which was killer. We also had a scallop appetizer that was tasty. Service was quick and efficient. It was busy, but didn’t feel cramped. I reckon that the beer geeks haven’t invaded this spot yet, and I kind of hope it stays off the radar. It’s a little fancier than most places - akin to say, Stone World Bistro. This place is easily in the top 10 as far as SD county beer bars. |
