A nice place on the canal side. Right in the center of touristic Gent. A good beer list with no real rarities but solid selections. The house beer Gandavum is OK. Service is good.

Zoals een belgisch biercafe hoort te zijn, alleen was de bediening deze avond niet erg vriendelijk.

The bar in Ghent with the largest variety of beers. Directly located in the center of the city, this place is always very crowded, no matter if its in the middle of the day or at nighttime. Has a cozy atmosphere, not too much room, it got two levels, the second one was more pleasant, because of the nice view.
They sell many different beers, including three home-made brews, which are very recommendable. Also you can buy tasty cheese with mustard, which goes very well with most of their beers.
The odd thing about this place was a houserule which doesnít make any sense to me. We revisted on the day we were leaving, to buy a bottle of Gandavum, their housebeer, but werenít able to get it, because they only sell it from 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Seeing all those people around that space already drinking their beer, that rule seemed kind of unreasonable. Working in the Altbiertown Duesseldorf I made the opposite experience, breweries sell their beer only till the early evening, because then, their taproom gets too crowded, and they donít want the botteled beer to interfere with the ones on tap. That actually made sense to me.

The building looks very picturesque on the outside seeing as how it lies next to the water. There is something almost medieval in its appearance in how it looks like on the outside next to the canal. The inside looks traditional, dark brown appearance and vibes. With two floors and a slight maze-like feel. Sadly the place was terribly packed and gave a confined feel with less people this could be really something. There was no place to be anywhere, all the spots were taken, you couldnít stand anywhere without obstructing the way of the servers. There were even people outside & it was cold outside and no other establishments had people out on the terrace. This appears to be the natural condition of this establishment. We got samples of the 3 house beers and went outside. Sadly none of them were exiting, given how crowded it was I didnít even brows the menu. Service was understandably rushed considering the crowds. They held up well considering the amount of people in here. Not a bad place but a bit too popular for its own good I would say. Food appeared to limited to snacks.

Even though they are open Monday to Sunday, it was closed on my first visit last summer. Open the day after, but had to leave the same day so couldnít enjoy the place as much as I wanted to. Lies down at the canal in an old (looking at least) beautiful building. Sat outside and enjoyed their own beers. Good selection and good service.

Service is not the best, although most of the time pretty friendly it takes them quite a while before they come around to order. Or they ask you without giving the menu first. With more than 100 beers, thatís not evident. Anyway, most of the time theyíre just understaffed. Beer selection is very nice, especially to be in the tourist area, they could get away with a basic 20 beers list. On top of the big beer list, thereís also a draft list of at least 7 if not 10 speciality beers. Food is just finger food (cheese, salami, head cheese, ...) but fairly priced portions. Iíve only had the head cheese with local mustard before, but itís very nice.
