This was cool, Leans more toward the yuppie crowd. Beer and food are decent.

I did not expect much from the tap room of the largest brewery in Oregon, but I was pleasantly surprised. First, the place is not as large as it looks considering the size of its building. It’s no German bierhall, although you could not call it cozy and warm either. Instead, it’s a large brewpub with a family friendly restaurant. Staff was very attentive, but did not seem to focus on the beer so much. That’s unfortunate, because I felt it was their strongest point. I was actually surprised by how poor the food was, straight pub grub, I actually had to return my first plate, short ribs that were badly overcooked. The plate’s presentation was not particularly beautiful either. Nothing scandalous, but under average for a brewpub and since you’ll hit so many of these in Portland, it would be wise to eat elsewhere. That leaves you with the beer. I was very impressed with Widmer’s specialties. First, they don’t need them, but they care about beer and aim at satisfying both people who care only for a weizen and those with more adventurous tastes. Secondly, their specialities were all very tasty, impeccably done and often very original. Frankly, the beer was as good as in many breweries with greater reputations. the Gasthaus may not be the most welcoming bar to come to strictly for the beer, but if you want to be surprised by a large brewery who respects critical beer geeks like yourself, here’s your very good chance.

Second visit here. Lamb burger and Rib Eye on the menu but no noodles. Good solid Cobb salad. Good selection of Widmer beers and experimental efforts as well.

Nice place, Widmer has a whole city block! Clean and very professional, attractive old tine signs that I wanted to steal. Food was very nice, had some clams swimming is a garlicky rich bacon broth. Service was prompt and very friendly with nice recommendations for town. Had a marionberry Gose, very nice in a beautiful glass. A little out of the way, but a short walk from Amnesia.

Widmer has been around long enough to know what they are doing with beer. They gasthaus was quite crowded when I dropped in so I opted for the sunny evening outdoor tables. Sometimes service can be lacking at a busy pub at the outdoor seats but my waitress was ON it. She was quick and observant and did not let my water glass or pint glass go dry. They can be a little on the pricey side but they have a great selection to back it up and the happy hour specials make it totally worth while. My food came out fast and hot and tasted great. I have not done the brewery tour here but Widmer does a great job making the whole block smell like fresh malts. Observing through the windows it is quite a production they have going there. I liked that they had some unique brews that you might not see in their store selection. keep up the good work Widmer.

2010-06. Visited on a Friday afternoon last June, it is quite a big place with huge ceilings and lots of space and wooden tables everywhere. No music was playing so it made chatting in our group normal. 12 brews were on tap, most are pretty decent. We ate a tasty southwest salad and pulled pork sandwich. Service was good if a little slow, not surprising for a busy night though. Enjoyable, would return to try more.

Atmospheric place in an old brewery. Malt aroma waft over you from the new brewery across the street. Decent selection, nice staff.

Very nice brewpub with a huge selection of Widmer beers. I have to admit, I did not know they made that many different beers. Clean place, good service and good selection makes this a win in my book.

Excellent Beer! This is another of our favorite places when we visit Portland. Tonight I enjoyed the Deadlift which is a bitter beer drinkers delight. 70 IBD and better than my previous favorite the Broken Halo. The Queen had Hefeweizen which is her all time favorite. We had the sauerbraten with potato pancakes. We know sauerbraten and no one does it better (except the Queen). Trust me. Despite what you might read elsewhere happy hour is 2-5 pm for the whole house and includes good food and discounted beer. They have a burger special on Sunday 11-5 and Monday 4-10 which will be our next visit. Would like to spend a little more time with Brrrrr! Just has a sample. Stay tuned.
