This English-style brewpub in downtown Canberra is a must-visit. They have set out to create a hearty English pub atmosphere and they have done it pretty well, from the wood-pannelled frontage to the Tudor-style beams and the collages of beer mats and labels framed on the walls. The only things missing are a local squire, a buxom barmaid and a few horse brasses. Instead you get students from the nearby university quoting "The Young Ones" at one another while the bar staff play Pink Floyd over and over and over... There is a terrific range of beers - 12 on tap the night we visited, including three seasonals. And the bar supplied tasting notes! How cool is that? First time Iíve seen it in Australia. The overall standard of the beer was good, with a couple of real stand-outs. The bar staff seemed to know their stuff. The crowd ebbed and flowed on the Friday night before Christmas that we visited. It was busy when we arrived at 7pm, quiet as the grave at 9.30pm, then suddenly mobbed with rowdy students. Go figure.

One of the original Australian brewpubs and still one of the best. Iíve been coming here for years and always love the experience. Its in the ground floor of an office block but once inside its easy to forget that you are in downtown Canberra. The low timber beams and dark decor lend a nice English pub feel. Tables on the footpath with hops growing in pots are also nice. The beer itself is all brewed on site and there is always at least a dozen on offer including regular, seasonal and one-off brews. On food, the wedges are great but the rest of the food is average pub style at best and not always available. All up the Wig and Pen is an outstanding venue and must be on the íto doí list of all serious beer drinkers. I love it.

Pub is located in central Canberra near the university. It is not much to look at from the outside but inside looks more like a Engish pub with low ceilings. It is fairly small but never seems crowded. In the back is where the beer is produced. The bartender is very knowledgeable about the beers on tap and will provide a sample if you are not sure about a particular beer. There is a small menu of pub grub, but everyone is here for the beer and good company. Too bad that Canberra is so far off the beaten track. Worth checking out if you are ever in the area.

Whatís going on guys? Not open until 2:30PM!
From the outside, this place looks pretty ordinary, and blends in well among the corny Irish-style pubs which surround it.
Once inside, the atmosphere is transformed and it is more like a traditional English pub with exposed beams etc. Excellent selection of well-made house beers on tap and food is available.

Real ale pub which probably triggered my interest in beer. It tries to be like an English pub with rustic furniture and low ceilings, but its not cosy enough. Being able to see the brewery vats is good and so are the potato wedges.

Such a delight to discover this place in central Canberra on a Monday night! Great range of beer brewed on the premises. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Good, reasonably priced food. A rare place that I could park up for a few beers on my own and not feel out of place. A top spot, almost worth going back to Canberra for (almost).

Small English themed brewpub, complete with false exposed beams in the ceiling and the microbrewery visible behind glass doors. Simple but good value food, a reasonable selection of year-round brews and a revolving door of seasonals and specials. They also have a selection of bottled ciders and occasionally a bottled Belgian menu. The value of the beer is a bit worse than that of the food but in the context of Australian pubs the quality is decent in most cases.
